Pride and Prejudice question? Character confusions?

I'm not very far into the novel yet (18% according to my Kindle) but I already have a question. Multiple times, Mr. Collins is referred to as being a cousin to the Bennet family. He then goes and states that he plans to marry Jane then changes to Elizabeth. Is he actually a member of the family or did the term "cousin" hold a different meaning during this time period?

He is something like Mr Bennets second cousin so technically he is related to the family whic his why he is set to inherit longbourne. But remember back inthose times they took all family seriously they would refer to their brother/sister in law as their Brother/Sister, so thats why Mr Collins calls them all Cousin. Have fun reading it is a truly excellent book :)

He really is their cousin, like the other poster said, err, I don't really want to give it away. Keep reading and you'll have your own question answered. But, yeah, he's a cousin of the family. Seems odd by today's standards, but it was probably common in today's society. The further you read, you'll understand his reason for wanting to marry his cousin, and again, it's not wrong back in those days.
