can your employer force you to work a shift opposite your regular work hours?

I live in wisconsin and normally work 2nd shift my boss asked if i could pick up and open shift that was 3rd shift hours 11-7 in the morining i told her i couldnt work those hours i have kids to take care of and she said if its not picked up she may have to" assign" that shift to me...is this even legal?

    Unless your contract states that you only work certain hours, then yes, it's perfectly legal. You have the choice to either take the hours or quit.

    You can't be forced to work any shift, but most people I know have to work different shifts, even though you can't be forced to actually do it, it is pretty common thing for business to expect of their employees!
