Foods you would never think aren't vegetarian?

I just realized marshmallows are not vegetarian after 6 months of being one!

I am frustrated but it is a learning experience and now I would like to know what are some other foods I may have mistaken as vegetarian..most commonly, contain gelatin?

Thanks!

Worcestershire sauce, barbecue sauce, and Caesar salad dressing all typically contain anchovies. There are vegetarian/vegan alternatives, but you have to look for the label and you should not expect to find them in a restaurant.

Prepared soups are deadly. They'll have all manner of beef or chicken broth in them even if they're not beef or chicken soups. They also sometimes hide some gelatin.

Packets of ready-to-cook-in-five-minutes flavored rice or noodles will often be made with chicken broth. It's pretty much a given in a restaurant that the rice will have chicken broth unless it explicitly says that it doesn't.

Gelatin will be in gummy bears and their ilk, obviously, as well as in cream cheese. I don't usually find it in jams (usually fruit pectin is used), but it can be, so read the labels.

Well, first of all it's not just foods, pill capsules are made out of gelatin.

Here's a list of all the things I know have gelatin: marshmallows, some candies like gummy worms or gummy bears, jell-o, jelly beans and most yogurts.

All of these listed can be found vegetarian except for gummy worms and jell-o (there probably is vegetarian options for these as well I just don't know of any).

You must read labels too, there are way too many products that have gelatin in them for practically no reason.

Margarine is also not vegetarian, but luckily there is vegetarian margarine one really good brand I know is Earth Balance.

If you buy packets of biscuits or packaged cake/s from the supermarket, check to make sure they don't contain animal fat. Don't eat any pink or red stuff like cake icing or lollies in case they contain cochineal/carmine.

Actually gelatine, animal fat and food colourings are the obvious things. Here's a list of other things you should avoid - http://www.vnv.org.au/site/index.php?option=com_co... The websites of most vegetarian and vegan societies have lists like this.

Lots of things aren't vegetarian because the govt allows them to be made without putting all the ingredients on the label.

ANYTHING with white sugar, I believe is not vegetarian (I know it isn't vegan).

Many common ingredients like dyes come from beetles.

    Just depends on your beliefs.
