MUSICIANS: Is this impossible, or if i try hard enough could it happen?
Im 18 and live in the uk, im about to go into my second year of art college in september, i chose this course as i wasn't sure what i wanted to do with my life and ive been told im good at art and although i enjoy it i cant see me enjoying it as a career.
My dad is happy with his job but said it is not where he wanted to be at his age i.e did not acheive what he wanted.
The rest of my family dont dream big that much or strive to get what they want except my cousin who is in a band and plays gigs around places and even got a chance to tour.
But if i was to try this i get told to stay with art.
Ive always enjoyed music but recently ive gotten more passionate about it and would like to learn the drums and hopefully be in a band one day and write my own music to share with others.
But, im scared. I dont know how to play the drums or guitar yet, and my ability to write music is not the best i wasn't really planning on singing because i cant sing.
Should i just give up and stick to what i know? im scared to fail. and i often put myself down and think the worst first.

Hi there.
I Feel Your anxiety. and you're right to Fear, because there aren't any Jobs that pay for Musicians really. (Apart from te obvious) But that's not our fault is it? We are Bound to do what ever we do best. And that's it.
For me, a Desk Job SUCKED THE SOUL out of me. I Hated every moment of it. And being a Musician, I counted every moment of it too.
I WILL Say this though.. If you Learn how to play the Drums, If you become a Musician.. No one will ever take that away from you. Ever.
Ever Heard of Nick Drake? He went & did a Degree, & then he Changed to Music. He did 3 Albums. No one Noticed him. He was Devastated & Couldn't take it in the Modern world. He couldn't face Not doing Music.. So he Killed himself.
...30 Years Later, his Music has helped Millions of People. And he is up there with the Beatles.
Just Make Sure you're passionate though. You won't make it if you don't have passion to get you past the worst.
There is one way of testing yourself.. Watch This http://youtu.be/5Zgx-Pl5XsY
Now, how did it make you feel? Did you feel it inside? Did you feel in a World of Your Own for as long as it Lasted? If yes, then you're a Musician. You just don't know it yet.
Best of Luck, Robert Kindle.

Go for whatever you want. You can learn instruments relatively fast , and by doing that writing music will improve. I could only write childish songs until I started learning guitar and everything improved, so don't be scared. If music is what you want to do then go for it, I put myself down all the time and it's a useless way to go about things. If you play music you don't fail, things may not happen for a long time and you may not be successful as such but music is self satisfying , and if you can play then you don't fail.

learn the drums...
but get a day job too.
and don't go to art school. none of you. don't do it. unless you have a full ride. otherwise art school is just a place to wrack up debt. my girlfriend and basically all of our friends went to art school. only one of them uses their degree.

The only thing to fear is fear itself. Try and you might just be famous.
