Which martial art is most successful in a street fight?
Remember that street fights do not occur in a fenced ring with a soft mat to roll around.
I would imagine a striking art would be most useful like boxing or kick boxing. Krav Maga also comes to mind.
Jiu Jitsu would be the worst due to ground work. Imagine rolling around on concrete.
Note: I am not a big fellow. I am 5'10" and about 200 lbs of mostly fat. Just being honest.
that is a good point i did not realize is that jiu jitsu may be used standing up. i always considered it a ground art.

Krav maga is not a martial art. It is a system that use techniques from martial arts.
There is no best martial art for fighting on the streets or in a bar, etc. The best thing is to be aware of your surroundings and avoid fighting if at all possible. If you must fight then it is great to be prepared because of your training. Anything that you have learn can be useful if you apply the techniques that you have learned correctly.
As far as which style to learn that is based upon your personal preference. Also, I would highly recommend you to choose your style based upon training with the best teacher that you can find.

sadly... my answer is costly, but lets face it, you get what you pay for.
And honestly, given what this program will give you with real dedication of time and a training partner, this is anyone's best option if you are actually put in the worst possible position in a street fight - On your back on the ground with a much bigger guy on top of you, hitting you in the face - even with normal jujitsu or any other martial art besides MMA, being punched in the face in this position changes everything.
And your size and athleticism wont be a factor if you do this program
Its called Gracie combatives. this isn't just Gracie jujitsu, its a FULL fighting system program designed with a real curriculum and a liner program to teach you in planed out steps.
And honestly its a little over $100, (I think its 3 payments of $40) but if you take martial arts or MMA classes until your "fight ready" (Which takes years no matter what martial art you pick) if you add up all the cost for the classes... This is your best option dude.
Think about it, quality MMA or martial arts classes cost from $70-$120 and sometimes even more, just for a months training. So 12 months, times say...$70 is $840...... and that's on the low range for just one year. Most masters have been doing this stuff for over 20 years. That's like $16,800.
Listen, just watch this video, if its not for you than no big deal but trust me, you could probably kick my @$$ after going through this program for like 8 months of at home training, and if not kick my butt, then at least survive in a street fight against me. (and i have years of experience with martial arts and MMA. I'm no master, don't get me wrong but still...)
I'm personally saving up for this program now. That how serious i am about this.
I hope you get this program before i do because you'll love it, good luck
If you do get it, try to get a hold of me and let me know how its working for you and if you like it please.
If the video link doesn't work for any reason just go to youtube and type in Gracie Combatives - part 1
its out of 3 parts but its what your looking for so watch all 3, I've been looking for the same thing as you and this is what i found.
you can go to the Gracie's website and see some free lessons and what else they offer

Mate,
Fighting isn't just based on a physical aspect, though.
You may find a guy who is really strong and has good technique, but once he gets in the ring, and he gets punches coming back at him, he just shuts down..
this is pretty common among first time fighters, especially since they don't know the right way to fight back.
Best way to be ready for a street fight is to breathe well , relax , and stay calm.. And one of the best ways for this is Shadow boxing, pretty much shadow boxing is pretty much a way to work out all your techniques , your footwork , your defence , your offense , and your stamina.
I've been 2 year martial arts champion in my school , and my way of martial art technique is Muay Thai.. basically what Muay Thai is , its Mostly about Self defence, and Best KO techniques.
this is a short video showing how easily this person got k0ed on the floor : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_824uz96q_Y&feature...
One last tip : dont be scared of your opponent, even if he's buff or really tall and muscular. Just remember, he's also a human. any kick on the balls or on his chin will knock him out....
Hope i helped mate. Goodluck in street fights.

I like how you asked a question and then immediately argued against an entire set of possible answers. I don't know what's "most successful" in a streetfight, if there is such a category, but there's plenty of stories out there about grappling winning fights outside the mat. Hell, my jiu jitsu and judo have saved me more than once. You'd be amazed how quickly a person realizes they can't win a fight once you lock a chokehold on them and tell them you're perfectly capable of doing it again if need be.

I believe that any art of fighting could be successful on a street fight when you know it well.
But more suitable fighting art to a street fight is muay thai and kickboxing and for any thugs is krav maga and kenpo karate. :D

I would say kickboxing has helped me the most in street fights that i have been forced into. Krav Maga hasn't helped me very much but i have only trained it a tiny bit. Jiu Jitsu has helped me almost as much as kickboxing in the sense of avoiding or controlling a fight because of the standup techniques taught in it like wrist locks, shoulder locks, and various stand up straight armbars.

Any martial art will if you train proficiently enough. All martial arts are to raise skill level which in turn develop the ability to defend yourself. Any inability comes form the person.

Scratchbitekicknutsitsu. Street fighting is nothing like on the mat so whatever you do to win is the best. Pull their hair, kick them between the legs, smash their face against the wall.
