Why do people use food stamps in convenience stores?

I work at a gas station where things are considerably marked up. About 4 or 5 times a day, people will buy something on the order of $50 in candy and pay with food stamps, then they'll stay in line and start buying lottery tickets, thereby wasting their cash. I have people attempting to buy alcohol with them, and earlier today, actually got into an argument with someone over how that was illegal. It seems some of these people are pretty irresponsible with their money, and it feels like my tax dollars are funding people to get food stamps so that they can play lottery with the cash they have. After the man I mentioned left the store, the guy waiting in line to pay for his gas behind him started ranting about what he just saw (he was held up for almost 10 minutes).

This makes people who actually need assistance look bad, and I'm sure there are plenty of people who probably need this, but can't get it. This is kind of a rant, but my question is why do people do this?

LETS TRY YOU MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS. WORRY ABOUT YOUR PURCHASES AND NOT OTHER PEOPLES...AND MAYBE YOU WONT HAVE TO RANT ABOUT IT. I DONT UNDERSTAND HOW THEIR PURCHASES AFFECT YOU PERSONALLY.

    Yes,

I suppose I can understand the frustration of the person who's actually behind the Counter..who's witnessing this with his own two eyes..

    -

The individuals who're buying Lottery tickets with General Relief Benefits and paying the inflated and outlandishly high prices for stale candy bars from a Gas Station are clearly not the norm.

    -

If it makes you feel any better,

the General Relief Benefits Program does moniter the spending of Individuals who're enrolled in the Program.

    If Lottery Tickets are purchased,

if someone attempts to sell or allow someone else to use the Benefits..

    if Merchants

or Clerks allow people to mis-use the Benefits,

if there are erratic and/or suspicious spending patterns then they will be notified and their Social Services Worker will contact them,

they'll have to go in an explain themselves.

    -

Whomever the individual was who was responsible for holding up the line in the Gas Station today,

I'm sure he wasn't exactly the epitome of an upwardly mobile,

    responsible,

    well-heeled,

    hard working businessman..

he is someone who's surviving on $200 per month and is (presumably) Homeless,

since Rentals aren't not ever going to be under $200 per month.

    So,

    Homeless,

    living on the streets,

and not having anything but a shopping cart with bottles and cans in it..

    well,

    you know what..?

    -

If the only thrill that guy has is buying stale Snickers bars for $3.00 each..

hoping and praying he'll win an extra $50 on a Scratcher,

and then going back to the hollowed out mound of soil,

    under the freeway overpass,

    where he sleeps and lives..

    well,

    I'm not mad at him.

    -

He's probably doing a whole lot better than I would be if I was in his situation..if he's not turned to crime and other illegal activities due to his situation and last I checked Scratchers and over-priced stale candy wasn't illegal..

then he is what he is.

    -

I'm surprised Mini-Marts accept EBT cards..

and I'm more than surprised that Lottery Tickets can be purchased with General Relief Benefits..

perhaps they have gotten the CASH off of the Card and are paying with cash?

    -

    Either way,

I'm sure you could contact the General Relief EBT Program and report you are seeing a mis-use of the benefits,

if you feel your tax dollars are being squandered by the Homeless recipients of General Relief.

I get food stamps and only use it in an convient story if I am traveling and have no cash, but that is just messed up! Actually, starting July 1 in Florida they are going to drug test people who get assistance of any sort, which in my opinion is a good thing. But probably most of these people that use food stamps are druggies. I can't stand people who are like that! They take advantage of the gov't and its wrong! but this is a good question! It doesn't make any sense!

They do it because they want to. Plus people who have food stamps also pay taxes you are not the only one so dont be saying that your money is funding their food stamps. And if you dont like it you can call the place where people go to aply for this and tell them, but i think your boss wont be happy to know that instead of working, you are puttin your nose in peoples businness.

Source(s): I have seen this before but so what? EVERYBODY PAY TAXES

People on assistance can have addictions too( in regards to the alcohol thing). I don't know. Where I'm from this is not common.
