  • Walking into an airport?

This might be a dumb question. I'm trying to get into an airport. I walked here with my bags, no car, and all the gates that I saw on the outside seemed to be for vehicles only, with signs stating something along the lines of "No Pedestrians".

I'm next door to the airport now unsure of what to do. It doesn't look like I can get in to ask anyone this. Has anyone else entered an airport this way? What should I do? Did I overlook something?

  • Question on how one responds to stereotypes?

I attempted to ask this question earlier, but it must have struck somebody as racist and it was deleted, but I'll try to reword this so as not to offend.

How does one feel when doing something that perpetuates a stereotype of whatever group you happen to belong to, and is there a sense of shame or embarrassment in doing so?

For example, there's the stereotype that black people like to eat fried chicken (though, I think pretty much everyone does). If you're black, and you go to a restaurant craving fried chicken, is there any sort of reluctance to order it, like maybe the white waitress will laugh about it in the back or something?

Or if you're Jewish, is there any sort of impulse to leave a bigger tip? Or if you're fat, to go to McDonalds? (<-- I fall into this category). I'm sure I could go on with countless examples to make this question sound more offensive than it already is, but please at least attempt to take it seriously, and if anyone has a story about such a situation, please share.

    Thank you.

  • Is there a special name for this exercise?

On a leg press machine, a normal leg press is (to my knowledge) supposed to be done with the legs only without using the arms to help. However, if one pushes on the knees with their arms while also pushing with the legs, a lot more weight can be pressed, and as far as I know, this method yields the maximum amount of force the average human body can put out. There are quite a few people who can leg press more than a ton for a set of 10 reps, so "maxing out" this exercise would probably gave a high record. Does anyone know if there is a record of the maximum weight lifted by this exercise, and how much that is?

  • Is there a way to express a function with a jump discontinuity by only using elementary functions?

...without breaking it up as a piecewise function. Can it be done with just one general expression? If so, do you have an example? If not, do you have a proof, or at least an explanation?

    Thanks.

  • Can someone give me an interesting, yet challenging brain-teaser?

Preferably one I haven't seen (though I guess that can't be helped). If you can, post, or link to, the solution in the sources so that I don't accidentally look at it and spoil it for myself.

    Thanks.

  • Probability question?

Hint given: The answer is very unintuitive

    The problem:

A woman has two children. One is a girl born in April. What is the probability she has 2 girls?

    Things to note:

We assume the probability of having a girl is equal to that of a boy, 50%.

We assume the probability of having a child on one day of the year is equal to the probability on any other day (that is 1/365, see below).

It is not leap year, we are assuming 365 days this year.

Last hint: The fact that the month is mentioned at all IS relevant.

  • Are they allowed to pull me over for this?

4th of July, I'm driving home from a party with my friends. A state police (NY) vehicle follows me for about 3 or 4 towns (20 miles or so), and a groundhog jumps out in front of me. I swerve to try and avoid it, and they pull me over for crossing the yellow line. Then they start with a million implicit accusations of me being drunk (I wasn't, didn't have 1 sip the whole night). I think they were just looking for drunks, and perhaps profiling. This was at about 4 AM, and nobody else was out. Was this a valid reason to pull me over?

  • Please share your messed up dreams?

Just had a dream that I was playing poker with my friends, then pulled out a gun and killed them all. They suddenly turned into these zombies (the image I saw was the zombies from the Elder Scrolls: Oblivion). I threw the bodies into the fireplace, when my neighbor knocks on the front door. I answer it, and he has a gun, trying to shoot me. I run from him, the rest is hazy and I don't remember much more.

So,if anyone is interested, what are some messed up dreams you've had?

  • Why do people use food stamps in convenience stores?

I work at a gas station where things are considerably marked up. About 4 or 5 times a day, people will buy something on the order of $50 in candy and pay with food stamps, then they'll stay in line and start buying lottery tickets, thereby wasting their cash. I have people attempting to buy alcohol with them, and earlier today, actually got into an argument with someone over how that was illegal. It seems some of these people are pretty irresponsible with their money, and it feels like my tax dollars are funding people to get food stamps so that they can play lottery with the cash they have. After the man I mentioned left the store, the guy waiting in line to pay for his gas behind him started ranting about what he just saw (he was held up for almost 10 minutes).

This makes people who actually need assistance look bad, and I'm sure there are plenty of people who probably need this, but can't get it. This is kind of a rant, but my question is why do people do this?

What is the altitude of a satellite in geosynchronous orbit around Neptune?

After several attempts, I arrived at about 33000 km (about 82500 km minus the radius of neptune) but apparently I'm still wrong. Can someone help me out?

  • When you are parallel parking for your driver's test, and a car is coming from behind, what do you do?

I'm taking my driver's test on Friday, and I'm nervous about parallel parking. It's not so much that act of parking, but what if I'm about to park on a narrow road, and a car is coming from behind? I know to look back, but what good will it do? I don't think you can skip over that part of the road test, nor pass the car as you would in a real-life scenario. Can anyone help me out here?
