You want foods which supply energy on a regular level. The brain obtains energy from blood sugar, so you want to eat foods which release blood sugar steadily (ie low GI carbs). B vitamins are also good for the brain, as is DHA omega 3 fatty acid. As for the brain needing lots of protein, sounds like nonsense to me. Proteins are required for making new cells, the brain makes fewer cells than any other organ so I doubt protein will help.

Anyway the best way to improve brain function is not diet, but exercise. Brain exercise. Read a book called "The brain that changes itself" for details on how exercising different regions of the brain improves function. And then get to work on the things which you need to improve, maths puzzles, word puzzles, spatial puzzles etc. Make sure you vary the types of puzzles you do or you just get good at certain types of puzzle and it is not easy to apply that skill to other areas; so a good program consists of highly varied exercises.

Also try some memory puzzles... haha.

The brain requires copious amounts of protein. If you are a vegetarian, increase consumption of bean and nut products. As a vegetarian this is likely the most important thing you can do. For omnivores it would be more vitamin and mineral based. See vegetarianism today is an important step. Unfortunately the reality is one of the major reasons human beings were able to evolve is because we had teeth that could chew large amounts of meat, which allowed us to maintain functioning, large brains. If your cutting that part of your diet out, you need to supplement it with protein sources other than meat.

The old rule is to eat a food that looks like the organ you are trying to benefit - hence, walnuts are good for your brain.
