Are my paper savings bonds safe if the country goes into a recession or depression?

Should I redeem them now in case the government can't honor them in the future?

Update:

I know the economy is and has been bad for years but I've been hearing that it could get a lot worse.

Someone might steal them. In that sense, they are not safe.

However, redeeming them will not help if the government cannot honor them in the future. If you redeem them, all you get is U.S. money. If the U.S. cannot honor savings bonds, U.S. money will be worthless anyway.

Also, all the government has to do to redeem them is print more money. No matter how bad the economy gets, the government can always redeem them by printing the money to redeem them.
