Do you have to have a passport to drive the Alaska Hwy in Canada?

We may be planning a road trip to Alaska at some point and time.

If you're driving from the US to Canada, or from Canada to the US, you need a passport, passport card, enhanced driver's license (not a standard one), or one of very few other pieces of ID that qualify to get you across the border. It doesn't matter if you're just passing through Canada, you're still crossing the border.

Technically, you do not need a passport to enter Canada.

However, US law requires everyone entering the USA to have one - even Americans. So, you would be stuck in Canada without one, and they generally want to see one when you enter Canada, even though there is no actual legal requirement.

The Alaska Highway doesn't matter. It's in Canada (mostly), and the fact that the USA is split up makes no difference whatsoever.

Yes. You will also need your vehicle registration. If you bring a pet you must also have its license and shot records. Buy a copy of the Milepost - the travel and trip planning guide for Alaska. Bring a camera and a journal. Read up on the wonderful and historic AlCan Highway. You are in for a great trip! Welcome to Alaska!

Yes. Starting last year, you need to have a passport to enter Canada and return to the US. You used to be able to have a driver's license and birth certificate, but now you need to have a passport.

If you're entering another country, you need a passport, so whether you're a Canadian going to Alaska or a US citizen entering Canada, you need a passport.
