Why do people hate Death Metal so much?

Honestly I love it. There is a great deal of Bands that can actually write artistic lyrics, create dynamic instrumentation, and sustain emotional lyrics ( as in powerful, like screaming/growling IMO)

But why in the hell do people hate it so much?

In my personal opinion, death metal is a vastly overrated genre. It astonishes me at how much praise it gets. It's such a generic form of metal, about 75% of the bands sound exactly the same! That and there's virtually no rhythm to it whatsoever, the constant blast beats get old for me real fast, and the vocals are the biggest turn-off: the vocalists don't even sing! All they do is growl, grunt, and roar which leads me to question the true vocal talent of so-called "death growls".

We all know that not everyone can sing, but can anyone with a strong enough voice learn how to do death growls? Now I know it takes some work to produce those types of vocals without damaging your vocal chords but how is that a singing talent when it's not even actual singing? I honestly cannot see how it is even after all the arguments I've had thrown at me about it, nothing's been able to convince me otherwise.

So yeah, I personally despise death metal and think it's a way overrated and generic form of metal. I have similar arguments (and equal distaste) for black metal and hardcore metal (or metalcore), all fall under my list of "most hated genres".

You can call it me being a wimp who can't handle it or me unable to "understand" it or whatever, I don't care. But I call it just me not liking death metal for the reasons stated above. I'll be surprised if I don't get a lot of TD's for it, but there's my opinion on death metal and he did ask. =/

Well I don't people hate it as much as they claim to. They just don't like it, and like everything people don't like nowadays, they get attention by bashing it.

Anyway, I'm not into the heavy stuff at all. The heaviest I'll listen to right now is Thrice's "Fire" album. For me, allot of heavy music is anything but dynamic. I think distortion can muffle the clarity of music. Also, allot of heavy music is pretty fast, and there's allot of blast beats, which I believe leaves no gap in the percussion aspect of the music. I think the distortion of the guitars also leave no gap in the guitar aspect of the music. The reason I like having those gaps is so you can fit in other instruments and sounds without it sounding like mush. Because of this, I believe there is more to be found in some lighter music.

I never quite understood myself why people like heavy music, but I have allot of friends that are into it. It's all tastes really. I think metal makes for a more "fun" concert, as it gets people really moving.

Also please consider that I like instrumentation more then lyrics, so I like hearing a bunch of different instruments, and really, Electric guitar, bass and drums is all you'll find in most metal music.

Because some people are too stupid to give it a chance and appreciate it's brilliance. Anyone who dislikes metal in general because of it's screams or anything stupid like that needs to FIRST

    1. Read the lyrics of ANY Lamb of God song because Mark Morton writes genius lyrics about stuff that matters...he has an effing masters degree, metal heads aren't all stupid high school drop outs like some people like to think. At least they're not like rappers who write about t*ts and a**.

    SECOND

    2. Turn on Kissing the Shadows by COB- even if you can't handle the harsh vocals, how can you not appreciate the guitar? It's absolutely beautiful... Alexi Laiho delivers flawless solos that can be appreciated by people who like ANY genre of music!

    THIRD

    3. Listen to Dead End by In Flames. A band that can collaborate harsh vocals, clean female vocals and clean male vocals supported by a stellar group of musicians who have the ability to evoke such an emotional response from the listener. Songs like this and many other death metal songs create such an emotional experience, and that's not an easy feat.

I think people just hear the harsh vocals and don't ever give it a chance again...they're stereotypical and stubborn! Luckily, there's millions of people out there who can appreciate its awesomeness!

Because its not a genre catered for general audiences. I love Death metal and yes it requires immense skill but you have to realize it isn't for everyone to enjoy. Extreme genres are for the extreme listener's ear.

    @CarverGurl

Nothing against your opinion of Death metal, but saying "growling isn't singing" is a lot like saying apples aren't onions. It's just a different vocal style meant to compliment the feel of Death metal. Extreme genres require extreme vocals.

Everyone thinks that all they sing about is Satan and Satanism. They sing stuff like that for them most of the time is what it all comes down too. Its for show. I love death metal, only bad part is the people that take it to seriously.

Mostly because of the fans and the music doesn't really have anything going on to hold people's interests. Death Metal fans like to pretend to enjoy jazz and classical music to somehow validate their taste in music. They also have this strange theory that death metal is closely related to jazz and classical music when in reality it is not. They tend to have an unwarranted sense of self importance because they can appreciate death metal and often times look down on and criticize any genre of music they feel is inferior. They also value music being technical over it's creativity as is seen by the thousands of death metal bands that describe them selves with pretentious labels like "technical death metal with jazz influences" or "technical progressive death metal with classical influences" who's idea of being technical is putting as many notes in a measure as possible and consider being creative sounding like every other Death Metal band that exists by having no variety in the song structure. The irony of this of course is that metal is not a very technical form of music even though the bands try their hardest to be.

    Because they don't understand it.

It's simply a matter of they don't get it, so they trash it.

Every music genre has detractors. They dump on country, rock, classical, etc., etc.

That's what's great about music, though. There's something for everyone to love and something for everyone to hate.

People without an artistic mind are afraid of the unknown. They shun that which is "different", therefore, they remain unaware of the amazing, obscure things that you can find in this world, if you just do a little digging. ^,..,^
