Why is tamaguchi used common enough instead of tamagotchi?
I used to call them tamaguchi all the time instead of tamagotchi. Maybe it was a dumb mispronunciation problem but I do not think so. I lived in Hawaii when Hawaii had its first tamagotchi craze. They died down and I moved to East Coast USA and they were just becoming a hit. About a year or two behind the power curve.
Anyone from Hawaii between 1995 and 1999 who remembers or liked them would be the best source of information; or someone from Japan.

I think "tamaguchi" are the proper Japanese name for them, but I may be mistaken. In English speaking countries they're called Tamagotchi.
