What does it mean when x is surrounded by two lines?

I kind of ignored geometry for a couple years and now I need to know. I have a problem where | x | is less than zero. What does it mean when the x is surrounded by those two lines?

The two lines mean "the absolute value of" the number they surround. So it would be "the absolute value of x." The absolute value is the amount that number is from 0. If you think on a number line, |-4| and |4| are both 4 because -4 and 4 are both 4 spaces away from 0.

This symbolizes the absolute value or the numbers in between it and 0
