Could this be celiac disease?
I have a friend who has celiac disease and she has suggested that I get my 5 year old daughter tested. These are the reasons:
1. My daughter is EXTREMELY tiny! She is off the charts (on the low end) for her height and weight. Both myself and her father are average height/weight. Her pediatrician has never been very concerned with it, because even though she is off the charts she is still following her own curve.
2. She generally has diarrhea or soft stools that tend to float (sorry--gross)
3. She has a big belly even though she is so petite.
4. She has trouble concentrating.
5. She has a VERY large appetite in spite of her small size. She eats everything (healthy/unhealthy) and lots of it!
Does this sound like reason enough to have her tested??
To Jackie M: Why do you say she is a greedy child?
And...she is extremely petite and skinny. She is not getting "overweight". When I say she has a big belly, I mean a hard, almost swollen belly like a starving child gets (which happens to children with celiacs, because even though they are eating, they are not absorping any nutrients). I do know what celiacs is--and it is NOT a gluten allergy, it is an immune system reaction to the gluten in the small intestines.

Why not put her on a gluten free diet for a few days ? You have a friend for advice and suggestions.

If she had celiac disease she would be allergic to gluten and wheat and would have terrible stomach pains and pass blood in her poo's. I have several cousins who have it. I don't meant to be rude but she sounds like an average greedy child and you say she has a big belly which could be the start of her getting fat, speak to your doctor about her eating as it could be something else but I don't think it is celiac disease. My grandson is slightly overweight because of overeating and he has been like this since a small child. good Luck.
