I woke up with both hands numb and arms tingling in the middle of the night. What could cause this?

I am 49 yrs. old and have always slept on my side. I was diagnosed with phlebitis of the legs about a week ago and pray this will subside soon. I've also noticed numbness or a cold feeling in arms now for the past several days and last night I woke up with both hands numb and no feeling in them. It took awhile to get the feeling back. My arms were numb and tingly as well. Today I still feel the numb sensation in both my arms. I am concerned because this has never happened to me before. My Dr. doesn't think the superficial phlebitis is connected with the numbness of the arms. He is wanting to do more test. I've been sleeping on my back w/ my legs raised due to the phlebitis with my arm on my stomach. I have not been laying on my hands they were on my stomach when this happend last night. I usually sleep on my side but can't because of legs being prompt up. I would appreciate any knowledge of what could be causing this to happen. Thank you!

Nerve-related issues can be caused by so many things that it is best to see a neurologist. Positional changes can cause the body to react, when you sleep, so it could be related to the problems you are already experiencing with the phlebitis. Inflamation in any area of the body can cause swelling that promotes numbness and tingling, even temperature changes.

I have had experience with lateral epicondylitis. This caused ulnar neuropathy...numbness along both of the outside edges of my arm. That is one possibility. There is also medial epicondylitis, on the other side. But, from what you describe, I would guess it is the lateral kind.

I get numbness from my pinky and ring finger, all the way up past my elbow, on the outside of my arm. This was actually caused by an injury to my neck. Sometimes these problems can be fixed by resolving the problem with the inflammation, however, such as the phlebitis.

At first, they thought mine (hoped mine) was localized swelling at the elbow that many refer to as "tennis elbow" that was causing it for me. So, if the swelling resolves, so will the problem, possibly. Keep in mind, as you propped up your feet, you have sent the inflammation away from the feet, possibly to other areas. And, even just putting your arms on your stomach instead of at your sides could be problematic. Remember that numbness is one of the body's alarms. It's telling you something isn't quite right. Maybe it is just that, while dealing with the phlebitis, you cannot sleep with your arms up, like that, on your stomach.

Here's what I would do, to see if I could resolve it myself:

    1. Ask if it is ok to take an anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen, as needed, when the numbness is worst.

    2. Also ask if GABA or Taurine is ok. It may take up to a month to work, but it REALLY helps me with my numbness, which I will have to live with for the rest of my life (long story, please don't think you will be like me--this was all about me not getting surgery when I needed it, on my neck). But, GABA and Taurine have been my secret weapons for YEARS! They are found in any healthfood stores and online, as well.

    3. Sleep with your arms at your sides.

    4. Try getting a 3 inch memory-foam mattress topper. They have some on Overstock.com usually, that are pretty inexpensive, regardless of bedsize. This also helped me, immensely.

I would actually try 3 and then 4, first. But, get on top of the ASKING part right away, in case you don't get an answer to 1 or 2 as soon as you would like. Then 1 and 2 are options,

Numbness when you are trying to sleep REALLY sucks. It worried me and woke me up for years. But, finally, I got a doctor to give me the facts about GABA and Taurine and my life is 90% better. Numbness is 90% better. A miracle, in my book!

If things get really bad, there are neuro drugs that are commonly prescribed for things like epilepsy. Tegretol is one of them. Then there are meds for depression, like amitriptyline. Both of these, believe it or not, in low doses, help with the nerve pain/numbness and make it easier to sleep. You can always ask your doc about those too.

Note: If your doctor talks to you about Lyrica, I would STRONGLY suggest the GABA or Taurine F-I-R-S-T! Lyrica is the shiny NEW prescription that people recommend for nerve pain and numbness. However, Lyrica is a synthetic of what GABA and Taurine do, naturally. I am sure the makers of Lyrica hate me by now, but truly, I was on it for 3 months. It worked 'just ok.' When my doc told me about the natural alternatives, I felt so much better just 30 days into taking them. Plus, there's the cost to consider. I was told the Lyrica is very expensive (possibly hundreds per month?) while GABA and Taurine are each under $10 for a month supply, especially if you buy online.

Best wishes, I know it SUCKS because I live it. If I can answer any other questions, feel free to email me :)

could be nerve damage, or lack of circulation. try standing up and rotating your arms and shrugging your shoulders. sounds like it wont do much but it can promote better functions in your arms. i had a pinched nerve and bicepial tendonitous and these rotations made it better. see your doctor and ask for some upper body exercises that are safe to do while prego and keep active. these rotations need to be done in the morning and at night.
