So, in Greek mythology, there's this guy named Jason who went on this bad-a** mythical quest for this thing called the Golden Fleece, which would secure his place as the rightful ruler of... someplace or other (doesn't really matter). Anyway, back to the bad-a** mythical quest. In order to search for the Golden Fleece, he needs a boat, right? Jason calls his boat the "Argo". He also gets a whole bunch of super-cool, strong, almost superhero-y people to help him on his bad-a** quest. Because these people will go with Jason on his boat, they call themselves the "Argonauts", meaning the 'Sailors of the Argo'. Together with Jason, they do awesome, bad-a**, mythical things.
ANYWAY, the Toronto Argos are named in honour/reference/whatever for/of Jason and his band of merry men. That's why the Argos are often referred to, more locally than not, as the 'Boatmen', going back to that sailor reference.
Now, a better question: how does a FOOTBALL team end up getting named for a sailor reference? Because the Argos football club were founded by members of the (Toronto) Argonaut ROWING Club. Apparently, the club began as a rowing club, but its members were into other sports like hockey and rugby, and, of course, football. Eventually, football took over the entire club, and I guess the name stuck or something.

No she was not. Might be getting Medusa mixed up with the Chimera Gorgon at the end of the film who protects the fleece. Or the Harpies that attack Patrick Troughton on the island.
