It's a group that good students are invited to join. It's mostly a community service group, but it's different at every school. If you were invited to join, then congratulations.
It can help you get into average to good universities. It won't really help you get into great universities. At really good universities, when they review applications, the reviewers essentially assume that everyone applying is of NHS caliber. A lot of people get invited to join NHS, but feel that they have better uses of their time. I declined my invitation for that reason. Also, a lot of people either forget or just don't feel like writing NHS on their applications. What I'm trying to get across is that you shouldn't feel like you have to join if you want to go to college, because it's not really a big deal.

I'm in National Honor Society, basically it's like Honor Roll. You have to have a 3.5 GPA or higher to get in. You have to participate in 8 or more hours of community service per semester. In return if your school's Honor Society has enough money you get to go on non-academic field trips. There is a $15 fee to get in and you get a pin. Plus it really helps you get into a good college because it is one of the highest honors a student can get. This is the way it works at my school. So if you have a 3.5 GPA or higher go for it...trust me it's worth it! Hope this helps! :D
