How much post-op pain with oral surgery?
I'm having 4 wisdom teeth removed Friday morning. I'm trying not to be a wuss about the whole thing, but I'm a quite a bit nervous about the whole procedure. I'm actually about 3/4 the way to scared.
I'm told that it will take at least 3 days to be back to normal. The websites I've been reading discuss "discomfort" following the surgery.
So here are my two questions:
#1 How much post-op pain can I expect? The oral surgeon said he will prescribe Vicodin for pain. I've researched the drug online and it is prescribed to for "moderate to severe pain". That sounds a tad more than discomfort to me.
#2. How much time off from work will I need? I've already taken Friday and Monday off, but I told my employer I'll return to work Monday if I possibly can. I'll also have to take off more days if I have to. I'm willing to push myself, but I have no intention of shoving myself.
Thanks!

Everybody is different. I had all 4 of mine removed December 6. I went in the room they hooked me up to a heart monitor(the one that goes on your finger idk what it's called) and they put the needle into my arm to make me sleep. Seconds later is was sleeping. All I remember was them doing the finger thing, the needle and him asking me to open my mouth for the thing to keep my mouth open and from then on I was passed out! Then I remember waking up in a little waiting area where the bring you so you wake up alittle and they can monitor you. My dad was right there beside me too. Then we got up and walked through the waiting area/front desk area and got in the car. I was a little tipsy while walking to the car(also it was winter and I live in Maine so it actually went better then I thought) and my dad actually had to stop at someones house to pick up his check(she lived like 5 mins away) we were there for like 10 minutes and I only went through like 1 1/3 thing on gauze on both sides. So I didn't bleed much, while others bleed just a little more or less. I got home and I laid on the couch and fell asleep(I slept like2 hours the night before cause I was nervous. So I slept most of that day. And for the past few days I just laid on the couch. Not because of it but because I was just being lazy :) they gave me the same meds but I only took them once the day I got it done. They make you sleepy sometimes and also don't take a lot of them cause there are easy to get addited to. I also got this mouth wash stuff. You use it the day after the sugery it's a mouth wash that is like anyother mouth wash just 60% stronger. It didn't sting or anything it just works extremely well. After you use it, it feels as though you did brush your teeth. But for the first 2-3 days you can't brush your teeth so it worked like a charm. But if you do get that make sure when you use it don't swish it around in you mouth to much cause it will hurt and you can damage the area where they took out the teeth. I didn't have much pain actually. The only time I had pain was like 2-4 days after the surgery when I would yawn it pulled on the stitches and it hurt. Not bad though just a lttle reminder that tehy were still there and not to open my mouth any wider. Also I talked a lot and that caused some pain. It started a few days after though because the days before couldn't open my mouth wide. So the first couple of days you might not be able to open your mouth much. And also what I expeienced wasn't really pain but it was more discomfort. So when I had it done it wasn't bad at all in fact if I had to do it again I would be more than happy to(I probably sound crazy) but it's because you catch up on sleep, you get to eat yougurt, soup, pudding and milkshakes for awhile and you just get to spend sometime by yourself without having to go do 20,000 things.
Good luck : )

I would suggest taking that Tuesday off as well. It really depends on your pain tolerance. If you follow doctor's orders you will be back to yourself Monday Afternoon!
I would ask if you could have another type of medication prescribed to you..
You will not really be in any pain.. It is more of a soreness pain than an actual throbbing pain!
You will sleep a lot! Which is great because it helps get the soreness out! I have had all 4 of mine removed also..
