Skip Barber Lessons? Good Idea To Start?

I might be thinking about going to take Skip Barber lessons as soon as I get my license. Right now, being 15, I don't have any experience karting or other relative motor sport racing. I don't want to hear your comments saying I can't join, because it's too late of my age even considering a career in motor sport racing and not having any experience. If anyone can help me here, I would like to know if gradually getting into a Skip Barber lesson school near my home is a good way in getting involved in my first steps in racing? But then again . . .how will I be sponsored and get hired by a team? With out any experience now, is is possible by taking these lessons over in time will help me get hired into a team? Surely, these lessons will give me the experience to take me somewhere, yes? I don't know how fast I will progress learning in auto sport racing, so I'm not going to entirely judge on how good I am, since I've never had the experience before.

If anyone is glad to help me here answer these questions in my message, I would really appreciate it. And please, let it be someone who has secure knowledge on the topic I am trying to discuss. I'm doing as much research as I can.

Thank you.

Update:

I've considered karting, but I just don't know if it's worth it now.

What is my best shot in gradually starting in motor sport racing?

Karting or skipping karting and take lessons at Skip Barber?

Motorsports are like any other sport, which is the key reason that you see most professionals having experience dating back to their childhood. Even if you have natural talent, it takes time to learn and develop the skills needed to use that talent. And if you look at many of the top levels of motorsport where the physical demands can be very high, you also have an issue where potential drivers that are in their mid-20s will be considered "too old" if they haven't already reached that professional level... so, all of that makes for an uphill battle and a rapidly closing window. Not impossible, but highly improbable.

Barber or Russell or any of similar racing schools are aimed at providing a path to a racing license. If you have no exprience they will provide an initial experience, but in practical terms, even if you leave the 3 day school with a provisional license, you will not be ready to compete. If you have a year or more driving experience at Open Track events and a karting background, then maybe such a school will get you going, but it is not anything near "complete" unto itself. Still, Barber is an excellent school and they have great instructors. It's just not reasonable to expect that a three day course with ~12 hours of seat time will replace the hundreds to thousands of hours of seat time needed to work on your driving skills. And even if you have natural talent, it doesn't mean that it will be fast to develop. Some will pick up their skills quickly and learn to apply them while others may ultimately do much better, but will take longer in having key concepts "click" for them.

Getting a racing license is the first step in racing, and it's the easiest. To get a professional job? For that you'll need to develop a history of success that will make someone want to hire you... and by "hire" you, in most cases that means offer you a chance to drive where you pay for your seat rather than you being paid. If you have enough success in the past though, you will likely have personal sponsors that will cover that cost (you get the sponsorship by winning and being able to present a good business case to potential sponsors). The reality is that you will need to be able to afford to pay your own racing budget yourself for a good amount of time. If you are talented and successful, and are good at marketing yourself and creative in how you can apply sponsorship, you'll soon be able to move up and begin covering some of those costs. If you are very talented at driving and marketing, then you will likely begin finding low level professional opportunities that in turn can lead to better and higher level professional opportunities.

And yes, karting is still more than worth it! It's readily available and less costly and a good way to learn or help keep skills sharp. And may be something worth considering as more of an immediate goal. Karting can be carried out competitively on a small fraction of the budget you'll need for even "cheap" racing (Spec Miata, Formula Vee, etc). Karting can be extremely competitive, involves most all of the skills you would use racing larger cars, and will give you a good idea of what kind of talents you have.
