if you think a car has been clocked is there a way to check?

my car is clean, the whole engine is clean, underneath has no rot or anything but ive got tips over the years to look at various other things to check if the mileage has been altered such as the gear knobs gaitor being frayed or in bad shape and the pedals being worn.

What i want to know is that if a cars mileage has been altered is there a way to revert the mileage back to what it was before it was altered so that you can see what the actual mileage is?

    Short answer, no.

Even if you think it has been clocked there's no way to find out what the original mileage was.

The only thing that might give you a clue is if there are previous MOTs logged on the system with the mileage on them. You can check this yourself so long as you have the current MOT certificate, here.

You can't prove that the garage has clocked the car, but it would have been as easy for the garage to check as it has been for you. This is why I'd always go for a car with a service history. If the history is present & has been forged, things are a lot more serious. Speak to the garage and see what happens: If they're decent, they'll have the car back or refund you some money. If you get no joy, speak to your local trading standards. It may be entirely genuine & the previous speedometer was faulty. In any case, most garages show a sticker on the instruments which state that mileage indicated may not be accurate: Although this gives the garage some protection, it doesn't absolve them of all responsibility to do simple checks like you've done.

The simple answer is no. However, there may be small tell tale signs such as the numbers on the odometer not lining up correctly or a small hole in the back of the unit which is normally covered by a blanking plate. If yours has the digital readout then you are well screwed because they are simple to fool by disabling the unit on long journeys and using a second key (the master remembers the milage!)

You can check the vehicles millage history on the direct gov web site by entering the relevant document information.

I have a customer that owns a ford fiesta 1.3 finesse on a 2002 plate car that when he purchased it showed 75,000 on the clock but was incorrect as on a previous mot it had been recorded at 134,000 miles as it was previously been used as a Driving school car. I did a bit of calling around and found that the car had a replacement dash fitted due to a speedo electrical fault.

go to jiffy lube, have them change the oil...they will tell you the true mileage. My odometer always reads less than what they tell me since I reseted it.
