99% of all registry cleaners are nothing but a SCAM, will show errors that actually are not there just to get you to buy their software.

If this is needed after a malware removal then a reinstall of the windows operating system is the best choice.

There is a recommended option for normal removal of temp files, history, etc..... and removal of leftover reg keys after a program has been uninstalled called

    Ccleaner(free)

    http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds

Get the slim version as it installs no toolbar

    # Caution: In Windows XP it is not recommended that you use the Registryfeature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items for removal, which can cause issues with other programs. In Windows Vista and Win 7 these issues have been fixed.

    * NOTE: Ccleaner during a Registry Clean-up will offer a Back-up of the Registry. Click Yes at the prompt. Default location of the Back-ups are in USER NAME/DOCUMENTS

The best alternative to backing up the registry before any changes are made is

    ERUNT

NTREGOPT is for Optimizing the registry BUT only needs doing maybe once a year

    Registry Cleaners -

These programs I don't just recommend any of them … There are plenty of even free RC's that remove needed entries and although I know how to recover from a PC that will not boot due to this, not everyone does.

JV16 Power Tools - ( http://www.macecraft.com/ ) - Without going into a complete description of everything this shareware can do, JV16 is one of the registry cleaners, that I have used for over 9 years now. Its not free, but I recommend this program 100%. Has helped me remove entries of pesky programs that have issues with the uninstallers.

Reg Seeker - ( http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm ) - Nice program to hunt for leftover entries and decent registry cleaner that has never removed “too much” on any of my computers.

CCleaner - ( http://www.ccleaner.com/ ) - Decent but “basic” registry cleaner... nothing comprehensive about it.

also as mentioned before the next program contains many tools, and one is a trusty registry cleaner

    Glary Utilities - ( http://www.glarysoft.com/) (FREE)

Some of the tasks this program can perform, are: Invalid Shortcut Fixer/Remover, Temp File Remover (scans whole HDD), Trace remover, Registry Cleaner, Start-up Manager, and most useful a new user (if you ask me) a 1-Click Maintenance feature that performs selected tasks automatically for the user.

"Free" as in "no dollars spent" or "free" as in "no money or time lost due to error"? The Registry is a huge file with perhaps hundreds of thousands of entries. Cleaning even a hundred of them wouldn't appreciably speed things up.

Furthermore, the Registry is a structured file. Searches for items in it do not have to read the entire file, or even a significant percentage of it, any more than opening a file with a program has to read the entire directory (folder) system of the disk.

On the negative side, an over-aggressive or just plain ignorant registry cleaner can remove critical items. Take a look at this little tidbit right here in Y!A:

I recommend you don't take the chance.

    Hope that helps.

i think of the question must be 'that's the least risky'. As you're probable conscious the registry is the main mandatory element of domicile windows. in case you corrupt it then domicile windows would possibly no longer artwork properly. i exploit CCleaner (subject concerns selection) by way of fact it makes a backup of all the keys it quite is approximately to delete so as that they might quite be restored if issues bypass worng.
