Are optimism and realism mutually exclusive when it comes to world view?

Relatedly, does being optimistic make you naive?

    I don't think so, no.

Personally I think realistically in a lot of ways.

But I stay optimistic, it's not that I don't know ..reality. It's that I choose not to be bothered by it and live my life happily, even if it means having some false hope.

No, I don't think so. By definition, you might think so: the world is an unforgiving place, as we know, and so to be realistic means facing the blunt, ugly truth about matters. However, I think that there are situations where they can both co-exist, it depends what makes you happy. Take a poor man, who has worked all his life - all that would make him happy is a wife, a little bit of money, and his kids. This is a realistic expectation from life, and would be something he could be optimistic about. However, I don't think they can co-exist when you have the case of someone who always wants more - this sort of person will never be satisfied, and won't be optimistic or realistic.

    Nice question though, *stars*.
