Chrysler 1996 LHS Transmission?

My nephew has a nice Chrysler LHS 1996 with a v6 3.5L. It has 172,656 miles on it.

It drove perfectly until 2 days ago. What happened was he was going 35MPH and all of a sudden the RPM's shot up like someone put the car in neutral and if you let up on the gas the car will lock into 2nd gear which I know is Limp home Mode.

It stays in that mode until I reset the ECM with my OBD II reader. There was no trouble codes listed before resetting.

I took it for a drive after resetting the ECM. It does shift from 1st to 2nd gear around 25 MPH then when you hit 35 MPH it will do the run away RPM like it was put into neutral and then it will lock into 2nd gear limp home mode. You can't go beyond 35MPH unless I race the engine beyond 4K rpms.

Still no codes from my OBD II meter. No check engine light also. All fuses are good.

I read online about the input and output speed sensors. But I assume the output speed sensor is ok because the speedometer reads without cutting out. Then I read that the shift solenoids might be bad or the TCM is bad. Or the transmission needs rebuilt. The fluid is full and it looks good to me. I did not add any fluid and I know not to use Dexron or Mercon fluids only ATF +3 or +4 if it needed it.

So I am a little bit stumped since its a computer controlled transmission. What do you people think it is?

    Probably a failed solenoid pack.

I'd suggest trying a basic test to find out if the main comp will detect any codes disconnect the battery for about 20 mins, then reconnect it and start the vehicle up. Test drive the vehicle and see if the engine light comes on and if the light does come on try pulling the code with your scanner. If the system is working you should actually end up with two codes one for the transmission and the other mentioning that the battery has been disconnected recently.I'd also try using the key put it in the aux position go up to the run position , go back to aux then back to run and back to aux then run and leave it there. The engine light should flash then pause and flash twice in a row this is code 12= battery has been disconnected and code 55 means end of the stored codes.

The reason I mentioned disconnecting the battery etc is bec sometimes the ECM won't turn on the engine light or detect any code bec the ECM has a fault.I'am not suggesting that the ECM is causing your limp mode problem but it's probably causing the no engine light/code problem, it may also have a bad ground or faulty wiring going to the ECM that is causing the no code problem.

I'd also recommend that you look under the hood take a good look at all the relays most of those relays have the exact same part numbers, try switching one with the EATX relay. For example if I recall right the A/C clutch relay is the same part so try switching the two relays around, then reset the ECM and go for another test drive. Those relays have one fuse that feeds pin 30 on the relay, pin 86 is the green wire that switches the relay on, it works with pin 85 and pin 85 is a ground.Pin 87 is the red wire that feeds pins 16-17 on the TCM.Note pin 85 can have a weak ground it's grounds along the other side of the battery on the frame/chassis, also the TCM has two grounds pins 53-56.

To me it sounds like either the EATX relay or EATX relay wiring problem otherwise it's the solenoid pack inside the transmission but those cars are famous for wiring problems and it could be even a weak plug in connector connection.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way if a mechanic or transmission shop conducted a full diagnostic on the vehicle they should be able to monitor the solenoids , pressure switches, TCM and detect where the fault is but these tests usually run 60-100 bucks. Some shop might run the diagnostic scan for free they will plug their tester in and monitor it while the car is started/idling and as they test drive it.

If you need anymore help or advice I've all the service manual/schematics/diagrams plus I've fixed several vehicles like yours and I own one and have fixed many different problems, feel free to contact me.

No the two transmissions are not switchable yet you are going to be waiting to discover struts lots extra value-effective then 3 hundred dollars a bite in case you keep around you are going to be waiting to discover a minimum of a series of rebuilt struts for about 3 hundred for the pair, have you ever checked on line and on ebay etc bec actual 3 hundred a bite is amazingly high priced till their heavy accountability precise of the line struts. wish that facilitates and bigger of positive fortune.via the way in case you go searching you may stumble on a sturdy used transmission for that motor vehicle at a u p.c.. vehicle wreckers for one hundred to 3 hundred dollars or so.unsure while you're attentive to this or no longer yet maximum struts bought now a days do no longer even incorporate the spring yet some providers have started out to grant finished struts , maximum ppl purchase the strut without the springs and use their old springs via employing a spring removing device which you would be able to hire or perhaps borrow at some shops and that they simply use their old springs if their nonetheless sturdy etc.
