    Miss hit and miss.

The only one that worked was Johnny Cash's cover is among the rare exception where the cover is greater than the original. But that was one of the four great covers by him.

It's always interesting when an artist decides to re-do a song. And you are right: some are hits and some are misses. Interpretation/perception are key. It also matters if the "re-do" song was a big hit for another artist or if it was just a filler on an album. An interesting comparison for you:

"Elvira" - written and released in 1966 by Dallas Frazier. It did not "chart". The original charting version was done by Kenny Rogers and the First Edition. It was re-done, with limited success, in '78 by Rodney Crowell. But in 1980 the Oak Ridge Boys were looking for songs for their "Fancy Free" album and chose "Elvira" as one of the songs to cover. When it released in 1981 it sky rocketed to the top of the charts, due primarily to the amazing bass voice of Richard Sterban. "Elvira" was certified platinum with 2 million units sold, a distinction it held for a very long time shared only with "Islands In The Stream" by Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton. As an aside, the single release version of "Elvira" fades out after the first key change at about a minute eariler than the album release version. It remains the signature song for the Oak Ridge Boys.
