What long range wifi adapter/antenna had the longest range?
I live in a rural area that doesn't have broadband in the area yet, and 3g internet is never reliable :/ so I was wondering if I can just pick up free wifi from a local town using a wifi adapter or a antenna, problem is that the closest town is ateast 4.5 miles away, I was wondering if there's one that can reach that distance and a little extra, or if I need to make one myself out of the direct tv satellite I'm not using, and if so tell me what to buy and how to make it, thanks

You can make the most hi tech receiver in the world, but unless they are pushing the signal that far and directly there's nothing to receive. There are some rural areas that do provide internet over the satellite, however. Might want to look into that.

Even with the "best" antenna out there, you may not reach 4 miles without "height". Wifi is line of sight, you have to be able to see the other end (more or less...) in order to connect to it. If you cannot see the wifi spot from the roof of the house, or some tower in your yard, you will not reach it in the first place...

Norgan Freeman once said in a movie 'Hope is a good thing', sadly in your case, thats all it is, a dish would be useless without a trans point, and 4+ miles is a bit far fetch for anything wireless unless you have a very deep pocket.
