How do you re-install Windows OS after catastrophic failure?
Dell desktop couldn't find the operating system. Took it into a data recovery system company and they were able to get all of my files off the computer. They said it had had a short. They fixed the short in order to get the data off the computer and said the computer was 'usable.'
I have the OS disk, and a driver disk. I have tried to install both of them but always run into some sort of error, usually that I need the 'other' disk installed before I can install the first.
Re-install to factory settings is OK since all the recovered data is now on a separate hard drive. (All of the online suggestions say to save data or do a back up first. I can't do that with a plain white screen, plus I don't need to do that since the data is on a separate hard drive now.)

Always install the OS disk first... This should not ask you a driver disk or anything else & when you finish then run the driver disk..
Sometimes you are able to recover everything from a hidden OS partition, Press F12 or F10 on boot and select boot from CD and then select repair / recover OS...

Re-install your operating system if you have to. When you boot your computer, as soon as it turns on, insert the disc into the drive. It'll read it and it should (keyword there.. your situation is fact-dependent) bring you up to a screen prompting you to reset your OS. You already have your files backed up, so just go ahead. Once you've done that, install any more necessary drivers you may need.
