Have you ever noticed your computer seems busy quite often even when not doing anything on it?
I notice when doing very little on the computer, it seems busy a lot of times (light blinking). Is this updates coming over the internet or internal things going on? It seems busier more times than other times of the day. Sometimes no updates are available so I know it isn't that all of the time. What do you think?

Just because you aren't doing anything doesn't mean your computer isn't doing anything. There are dozens of processes running all the time that you never notice. Your computer is also in constant contact with various services and servers which aid in keeping your computer up-to-date and free of problems.
Even if you aren't working on the computer it is still sending and receiving information as well as running processes so you get the little blinking light almost constantly.

Besides updates, many Anti-Virus packages do background scans once a day or so when they detect the system is idle. Moving the mouse should make it go back to sleep after a few moments.

Could be any number of things. But for the most part this is probably the system downloading updates and things. Most of this is set to happen when the computer is idle.

Inadequate RAM or scattered/faulty files on your hard disk can cause that.
You could also have spyware and such secretly on your computer.
