Obama believes raising the debt ceiling weakens the US. Obama wants to raise the debt ceiling. His motives?

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. … Increasing America’s debt WEAKENS us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that ‘the buck stops here. Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better"

... My God - *how* many times is this quote going to be dragged out of the closet....

Can you think for a moment of the *context* of why he said that on the floor?

He was against the cost (not the cause) but the cost of the Iraq/Middle East wars... he actually had good ideas that Bush should have listened to that would have maybe *kept* Bush from having to raise the ceiling, but we all know how well the GOP is willing to hold bi-partisan meetings, don't we?

...Now that he's President and facing impending financial doom for all of us, he's trying to raise it - for something *worthwhile* - like world financial stability....

If I suddenly became President of my company, I'd prolly have a different outlook on things going on than when I was just sitting in a cubicle and working, no? Or would I be an inhuman monster too, just like you think Obama is?

To the 2 posters above me?

Obama got his debt celing raise when he passed the 814 Billion stimulus.

3 billion on Cash for Clunkers

    130 Billion Auto Bailout

TARP yes he did vote yes to it as did 218 democrats in the house and Senate. The republicans actually overwhelmingly votes no to TARP. The CBO states " Taxpayers "should expect" to recoup 87% of the funds that were invested on their behalf in the Capital Purchase Program and lose the other 13%.

46,000 troops headed to Afghanistan by the end of the year and 15,000 coming back. Nice trade huh?

    Libya... enough said there.

He does not deserve to get any more money period.

What you are really saying is it is ok for your president to do it and not be taken as a sign or weakness but a sign of greatness? You are kidding right?

The democrats had the ability to end all wars and "bring the boys home" from January 2007 to January 2011. Why didnt they?

Either it is good leadership or bad leadership. No in between. He said that statement after he said he would vote NO to the debt ceiling being raised. Do not try to make it an "out of context statement"

it was a please elect me statement.

I particularly like the part where he says it's a sign of "leadership failure". Ahh, out of the mouth of babes...

It's pretty obvious what his motives are - to bring it all crashing down so it can be replaced with a system he likes better, no matter what the rest of the Americans want.

Yes, raising the debt ceiling weakens the U.S. Not raising the debt ceiling weakens us far more, especially when defaulting causes the dollar to crash and basically dooms our economy to a massive Depression unseen since the Hoover and Roosevelt administrations.
