Gastric bypass + a lap band and alcohol - a dangerous combination?

Update:

My friend has had a gastric bypass. The pouch was left too big and she had lap band surgery over it. It is rare, but it is done. Now alcohol is a big problem. Wondering - How to deal with this?

Yes, it is a very big deal if she starts to drink excessively and regularly. Alcohol post gastric bypass hits us much harder and is basically a straight shot to the liver. There is a good risk of a transfer addiction to alcohol in some but certainly not all.

I rarely drank before surgery in 2000, but started in at six months post-op and drank ever increasing amounts til August of 2004 when I got sober. At the end my liver hurt, I was horribly discolored, my kidneys were barely working, I SMELLED like booze and had to keep it on me otherwise I started shaking real bad and throwing up from withdrawals. It was a total nightmare I don't wish on anyone.

As far as how to deal, it is up to her. Only she can put the bottle down. You could have her read up on transfer addictions after gastric bypass so she knows what she is doing to herself but only she can make the decision to stop. You, as her friend, could make sure you dont enable her drinking or the consequences thereof.

    Hope this helps.

I do not think you can have a gastric bypass and a band at the same time. The band would not be needed if you have a bypass.? Alcohol speaks for it self it really is not necessary. It is also high in calories no matter how it comes. You want to loose weight right? Keep away from carbonated beverages! Drink healthy things with out sugar.

Read the package! When you mix something, fruit and protein. good luck
