Can I home can homemade baby food?

Update:

tobyink,

I can "home can" most anything (it will end up in 1/2 pint jars). I want to try baby carrots, baby peas and possibly baby roast beef. If it works, it is a savings to my daughter and her new baby (to be born in February 2012).

Update 2:

I am just planning ahead.

You COULD ... but I'm not sure I see the point. One of the benefits of home-made food is that it's fresh-- you avoid th nutrient and flavor loss that goes along with canning. And do they even make jars that small for home -canning use?

Also, there IS a very small risk of botulism from home-canned foods, even when using a pressure canner. Many moms would feel uneasy taking that risk with their infants.

Finally, what happens if baby doesn' like a particular food, or opts to refuse purees altogtether. You end up with 50 jars of green beans and baby won't touch green beans?

Given that baby won't even be eating solids (if she's born in Febrary) until next August or September, it's very hard to see the point in canning tons of stuff NOW.

If you'd like to save her money, then take the stuff you grow or buy NEXT summer, and you can puree and freeze it in ice cube trays. There's still the chance of waste, but it's a lot less work and risk.

I agree with Pippin and want to add that if you can a large amount of food you could end up with a lot of waste if the baby has an allergy to something. It does save money but I would stick to the good ol' freezing in ice cube tray method!

Are you asking whether you can put homemade baby food into cans?

Probably, but most people don't have the necessary equipment for home canning.
