ways to get fit for horseriding again?

I should be back in the saddle in a month - 2 months time so I have a question regarding getting myself ready for it.

Was in a car crash 3 weeks ago, broke my sternum bone, cracked a rib, have severe haemotoma in my stomach and a badly bruised hip bone.

And before the accident my mare was out of work for over a month due to proud flesh issues. So I havn't ridden her in around 2 months at this stage.

She is back in work, I have a girl who owns the yard riding her for me, so horse is grand, she is working nicely getting her into work slowly (I supervise her riding sessions and give the girl riding lessons on her)

it's myself this question is based on.

Physio therepists told me that I should be able to ride in around a month's time, but they had no specific way of getting my muscles fit for it.

So I'm asking on here to see if anyone has any exercises or tecniques you use to get your muscles back to horse riding fit. I want to at least get my calf muscles and arm muscles used to work again before I get onto the saddle. It would not do me good to just jump into the saddle onto a hot arab mare after 3 months and severe injury.

Any exercises you reccomment will be talked about with my physio before I try it, and I also won't be trying them for a good few weeks yet, I'm still in a lot of pain from the carch. But it would be nice to get a head start and get myself looking forward to being in the saddle again!

Update:

Stabbed, if I get nothing on here but my physio comes up with something, I'll let you know!

Update 2:

Thanks everyone, I'll start going for small walks and I'll take up swimming once the physio says it's ok!

I was in a skiing accident a few years ago that left me not being able to ride for a few months. Total suckfest. I had shattered both my kneecaps. For the first few months I was not able to ride my physical therapist helped me out with these suggestions.

    1. As the others have mention, walking does wonders when it comes to getting fit. Walk a couple of blocks, this will stretch any muscles, and get the heart rate and metabolism pumping again.

    2. Light Yoga. Yoga is a wonderful therapy exercise. It stretches core muscles as well as the ones you weren't aware of. But it also creates lean muscle and tones your body. I say light yoga as there are many forms of yoga. Ranging from beginner to expert. So please do your research and begin with the lightest form of yoga.

    3. When you are feeling up to it. Squats are another form of great exercise. It will certainly build up your leg strength and tighten your abdomen back up for riding.

    4. Lifting a few light weights. Whether its with your legs or arms lifting weights will certainly stretch out your muscles.

    5. Swimming also works wonders for the body and especially for those trying to work around pain. The water is very soothing and before you know it you will feel the muscles at work. Try a few laps.

    Good luck!

Still would provide it a check out!!

the only thing I can think of is sitting on a barrel so you can stretch those muscles out and not get as bad saddle seat. it will also help with balance.

Lots of walking will do you good. When your physio says so and you feel ok, throw in a couple of gentle jogs on your walks.
