keyboard problem with characters?

I am UK based, but when I select a key on the keybaord the character that is supposed to appear on the screen is different. for example i want a pound sign when i press shift and 3 but I get a #. same when i want an ambersign i get ". any suggestions how i chnage this

    Plug the keyboard into yet another laptop. If the hardship maintains to be it particularly is the keyboard. If no longer it particularly is the laptop. Then circulate from there. BTW, Caps Lock isn't Shift Lock. . will in no way be > in case you have Caps Lock on - you should press Shift to get >
