capital one says i opened an account with them when i really didnt?

they sent me an email with my name and the last 4 digits of an account number, and told me to update my personal information. the problem is that i am only 18 and i never opened a bank account with them. I filled out job applications which required my social security number, so does this mean that i am a victim of identity fraud? could my credit be ruined for the rest of life preventing me from putting down payments on a car or a home later down the road? what should i do? plz help

Do NOT respond to that email it's just a scam and they want to get your account number and ss number and address so they can take your money later. No, you're not a victim of identity fraud because all they have at this point is your email. No, your credit is not ruined, that is unless you've done something by yourself. You can get one free credit report per year from each of the three credit reporting agencies. They will need your ID proven, but it's ok because it was "you" who initiated the request. If you don't initiate something then don't respond to anything that says you owe, says to pick up a package, wants money, wants you to verify something, or come pick up a money order, etc. etc. eventually you'll learn by the words that they use that they are scamming you and just delete it.

    This is a SCAM

They want your personal information - then... they will steal your identity.

Check your credit reports once a year (all 3 for free) at

    Annual Credit Report.com

Every adult should do this. If you ever spot, ID theft, simply report it
