puppy has started growling?
Our pug puppy is about to turn 5 months old soon. Just this last week or so he has started to growl when you give him meat. He doesn't eat meat all the time but sometimes as a treat or mixed into his food when we have left overs. If he growls should I take it away from him? I've been making a point of laying my hand on his head when he's growling in hopes of showing him he doesn't need to protect his food from us. He doesn't snap and is usually well behaved but I don't want this turning into a bad case of food aggression. Any advice?

A growl is a WARNING, to back off. If you don't listen or get a trainer to stop it he WILL start to bite.

First of all, when you put your hand on his head he thinks you are rewarding him for growling. You could not give him meat for a while and then maybe he will think of it as a reward. Maybe (but probably not) he doesn't like that kind of meat. If he growls you take the food away and when he calms down try it again. If he keeps growling don't give him the meat. Also if he growls you say no so that he knows that growling with food is a bad thing. Hope I helped at least lattle ;)

When I was a child our Labrador had a similar reaction when we fed him bones. My mother used to spray him in the face with tap water from an old spray bottle every time he growled and that worked for us. Its all about dominance and the earlier you establish the basic chain of command, you should have a happy life.

Best of luck, and don't give up or give in!

Some dogs don't like to be touched when they eat and don't want to share food. You shouldn't lay your hands on him or he could bite you. Say "No! Bad dog!". Or he could be playing but I would get him out of the habit before it gets bad.
