has anyone had laxative powders prior to a bowel exam?

I have had one sachet at 8am this morning but they dont seem to be working as well as they should, i have only been twice in 4 hours. I have another sachet to take at 4 but am worried my bowel wont be cleaned out by tomorrow for my procedure. Anyone else had this ?

Update:

I am having a barium enema tomorrow so taking the laxatives today.

Oh Yes, and it's not barium meal as said. I had Pipalax, It's the second one that makes it work. Mine worked within 10 minutes of taking it, You MUST stay in the bathroom as there is no warning. It comes out in a huge rush of poo and water, and you will go many times this evening until all is clear. It's not uncomfortable more of a nuisance because you cannot stray far from the loo.

As Kernow Lady said, it should work after the second sachet. And god will it work! I would recommend that you keep drinking LOTS of water throughout the day, as a lot of what you will pass will be water and you could get dehydrated. The more fluids you drink, the more likely you are to pass everything. If by tomorrow the doctor decides that it hasn't worked well enough, you may have to have an enema (colonic irrigation) to remove the rest. This is not all that unpleasant though, I hear some people have them for pleasure o.O

I agree with Kernow Lady that it's NOT a barium meal.

It's actually quite a common thing for a laxative to be prescribed prior to a bowel examination, my friend.

Try not to worry about how much you pass. The doctor will still be able to determine whether there's a 'problem' or not and, dependent on the particular type of exam you're having, will still be able to 'feel' or see what they need to see.

    I wish you well.
