There are different types of matches depending on the type of tournament.

On the Ultimate Trick Shot Tour, the matches are "freestyle" meaning you just describe your shot to your opponent when it's time for you to shoot. It could be something that they've never seen before. In these tournaments, you get three attempts and score one point if you successfully complete the shot on any attempt.

In Trick Shot Magic or the World Cup of Trick Shots which are televised on ESPN, shots are selected from a pre-published book. Here, you only get two attempts and score one point if you make the shot.

In APTSA or APPA events, shots are given a difficulty rating (higher is more difficult). You are given three attempts and points are awarded on a sliding scale. For example, for a 10 point shot, if you make it on your first attempt you score 10, second attempt gets 9, and third attempt gets 8.

Some matches are purely exhibition and are scored subjectively by a panel of judges. Scoring could be based on anything from the difficulty of the shot, the aesthetics of the shot, or the entertainment value of the competitor.
