Dodge and Chrysler Shifter stuck in Park Fix and Recall Info.....?

The problem is that your "pink" plastic "Shift Interlock Latch" broke. It is NOT a problem with your Transmission.

Chrysler (Dodge) has a recall on this matter for 2005 - 2007 Dodge Charger, Magnum and Chrysler 300 equipped with a floor shifter. They claim to service your vehicle free of charge (parts and labor). When I called my dealership, they were aware of this problem and asked for my VIN. Turns out I didn't have a qualifying VIN number, even though my make, model and year are qualifying factors. I called Chrysler's recall center to find out why "my" car does not get the same offer. They said because of "where" it was made...even though it has the same faulty part...That doesn't seem right.

After much research, I found that there are hundreds of people having the same issue. There is an alloy type duplicate part that is being manufactured and sold for only $21. The dealership will make you pay for an entire new shifter that comes with the same faulty plastic part for around $175 plus labor. They don't sell just the part. I've gone to many of forums on this topic, and some will show you how to fix it yourself, but I'm not going to even try. I bought the part and will ask the dealership to put it in for me. Some have said that the dealership will put this part in for you and it takes less than an hour.

Here is a "how-to" link with photos for getting your shifter unstuck temporarily with a screw driver...be sure to read the very last post, as his idea is the easiest fix and is what worked for me...(a 43 year old Mom, lol): http://www.lxforums.com/board/f74/stuck-park-heres...

The part is called a "shift interlock latch"...you can get it at rockauto dot com. It is a Dorman part # 924706.

One more thing...If your car falls under the same year, make and model for the recall K39, but are told that your car does not qualify because of "where" it was made, please send me an email. If there are enough petitioners, I can try to put together a petition to send to Chrysler's Corporate to encourage them to service "all" cars with this faulty part...and if that does not work, a class action law-suit might. People are paying on average $450 for this repair.

Chrysler should not get away with having the knowledge of this faulty part and not taking the responsibility to repair "every" Dodge / Chrysler that's been affected.

Update:

Your comments are automatically sent to my email. Please indicate if you would like me to add you to the list for a possible class action lawsuit. I don't know how long it will take to get enough people on the list for a class action lawyer to accept, so please be patient...it may take awhile.

((I can't imagine what they were thinking when they decided to make this part from plastic...it is not a stationary part, it is a latch that locks and releases the shifter every time you drive or park your car...for me it is used multiple times a day. I think using plastic was intentional and a ploy to gain revenue for Chrysler.))

Update 2:

Ok, lol...I've been getting responses to this post for 3 years. It's old, I've contacted a few Class Action Attorney's, but they don't seem interested. If someone else wants to take this on, by all means go for it, but I am over it and too busy with other things. I'm sorry your car is having this ridiculous problem. This update box only gives me a limited amount of space to write...look for my message down there with everyone else's posts...or go to the link ABOVE to get unstuck with a screwdri

I'd gladly join a class action law suit. I totally had the same problem with my 2007 Dodge Charger Daytona. I looked up the recall notice K39 and it didn't give a specific VIN # so I contacted my local dealer and told them the recall notice. They looked up the last 8 digits of my VIN # and advised me that my car was not covered under the recall. They said that I had a $200 deductible on my extended warranty and that they would have to change out the entire shift assembly.

I told them that I can replace the part for under $40 so I won't be using my warranty.

I was able to go to the local O'Reilly Auto Parts and pick up the part for $35.99 plus California sales tax (Total $38.95). I plan to install it using the video instructions that were posted. Thanks

This happened to my 2006 Chrysler 300 Srt8 over the Memorial Day weekend so we tore that sucker apart and replaced it for $30. I called them and there is no recall but an easy fix (I'm a female with long, thin, fingers which really helped) Lot's of DIY videos and blogs, who wants to deal with the dealership anyway? Car towing, etc.

I just experienced this problem yesterday. I called the local Chrysler dealer and the Chrysler recall center, and was told that the car was not part of recall based on VIN number.

    Chrysler 300 Stuck In Park

    Hello,

We just purchased a 2007 Charger just 3 weeks ago and this morning my daughter wakes up unable to get her car out of park and was late for class. I called several Dodge dealerships but they want to sell the entire shifter and that's almost $150. not including the cost of replacing it. I did call Chrysler and the recall number. I was given the same story I've been reading on here so please include us in that petition if it's not too late. Karen Carter and Kayla Brown (xtrahands56@yahoo.com). We are not made of money and the story given to us by Chrysler sounds just like big pockets shooting the bull. They may very well have known about this issue beforehand and planned on telling us no specific vin # had a recall, we won't know. Thank you for this blog I'm pretty teed at the moment.

Put me down on this list. I was out in a area last night that was unfamiliar to me, came back to the car tried to put it in drive and that was a no go. Luckily My friend found a video on a quick temporary fix. I have a 2006 300 srt8 and the dealership wants me to pay $425 for a new shifter! This is outrageous, I don't understand how they say this is not a safety problem, what if I need my car to move. They are wicked people trying to save a buck making this thing out of plastic and now charging people this amount to fix it! So like I said, I will go to war with you this law suit! This is wrong! How far along are you! Need to call a Newspaper and show all these complaints!

07 Sebring stuck in Park, the inter lock hook on the pink plastic of the driver's side broke off. Found a spring under the console and wondered if it being off was part of the problem. Yup. the spring pulls back on the pink Interlock? to release the key from the ignition. Without the spring pulling back, the gear shift cannot be changed. Chrysler "yeah we sell a lot of those" but you can only buy the entire shifting mechanism (still has cheap plastic piece) for $100. Fixed with paper clip through the pink part using the cable slot, bend to allow a loop on the spring side and flare to prevent pulling through, or make a loop. Should be a recall if they "sell a lot". Leaves people stranded for a stupid reason.
