Is there a way to find out what film production is being shot on my street without bothering the cast and crew?

I live on a scenic street that's a popular filming location for television and movie productions, and they usually have a minimal impact on the residents. This production seems to be significantly different because of the level of security and secrecy involved. My heart lurched when I pulled onto the street this afternoon because I hadn't realized they were filming, and thought the police barricade was due to a horrific accident or crime. I relaxed when I saw the Star Wagons and realized it was just a film shoot, then immediately became curious about it. I had to show my ID to prove that I live here in order to get through. That's never happened before! The police lady was totally not willing to give me any information at all. I've been staying at my mom's house in a different part of town lately, so I wasn't here when the notices about the filming were put up. There aren't any yellow production signs pointing the way to the set, so I had no tip-off, and have seen few clues since getting here to indicate what production is being shot. I know it's a Universal production because of the logo on the trucks. I can't see any signs on the Star Wagons or anything else, and at the moment there isn't much action taking place. The actors are all tucked away in their trailers, and it's just the crew outside setting everything up. It's literally right outside of my house, and my dogs are going insane over the lights and commotion. Ironically, I came here for quiet tranquility. Now I'm hyper, hence the babbling. I really want to know what's going on, but I'm under the weather and don't want to go out to inquire and wind up puking on someone. It would be fantastic to know who's here, though.

So, is there a way I can look up information about movie productions in LA by their filming locations?

Bonus Question:

What do you think of filming in residential locations? Should residents have veto power over what is filmed on their street? Should homeowner associations be permitted to ban all residents from renting out their homes for productions? A few months ago I read the article in the LA Times linked below about contention brewing in a gated community in Los Feliz over filming. Some homeowners were thrilled with the lucrative profits they could make by renting out their houses for interior or exterior filming locations and the excitement of having "stars" on their street, and others felt like their privacy and peace were invaded by the productions. They appealed to the homeowners association to prohibit filming. Do you think that was justifiable or unreasonable?

If productions regularly take place in your neighborhood are you bothered by them? Would you object to your neighbors renting out their house? Would you mind if there was a prolonged production on your street? I don't think anyone on my street has ever profited from the filming because it's mainly just exterior shoots, and our street is public. I don't think we've ever had a say in the productions either, but I'm not positive since I'm not the one who owns our house.

Feel free to answer this question even if you don't live in LA but have an opinion about whether homeowners should have the right to rent out their house for productions. Also, tell me which actors would impress you enough to compel you to go outside when it's cold and dark and you're feverish and nauseous. : )

Update:

Seeker of Truth ~ Oh wow, I thought I was the only teen who appreciated Maggie Smith! She is awesome. :)

Obviousman ~ I apologize that this isn't a travel-related question, but since many of the regulars in this section are LA locals I thought it would be the best category to get a knowledgable answer about filming in neighborhoods here. Thanks for your answer!

Update 2:

Maliboo ~ IT IS SAVAGES!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got to meet some of the cast and crew!!! I normally don't get that excited, but this was especially awesome to me. : )

Savages (Oliver Stone/Universal) has been filming in several locations in Santa Monica / Malibu this week.

They do a lot of filming in my neighborhood, but I won't let them use my home, even though a producer relative has asked because of some unique features. The crew is typically very polite and careful, somewhat more so than filming I've seen in LA city. We have had tv series film in the neighborhood, every week for years, and not really a problem, because we'd all complain big time and the local government here tends to listen, and because they do need to get permission to use our street. However, I have allowed filming at a property we generally only stay at in the summer and some weekends, because I know the person who asked and I knew they weren't going to destroy anything, and most of the filming was out on the deck, rather than inside. (Even so I made sure we were listed as additional insureds on the insurance and the coverage amount was appropriate.)

If filming interrupted my peaceful enjoyment of my home, I'd have a problem with it. I like quiet.

    Get well!

Hi Sky, I wouldn't mind it at all if filming happened in my area but then again, I am me. Anyone has the right to appeal actions which affect them so I believe they were justified in trying to prohibit the filming but I hope those people had a decent reason for it.

I may be mistaken but won't property values rise if the film is successful?

No, productions have never occurred near my home and I have never even met an actor. Why should what my neighbors do bother me unless it negatively affects my way of life?

I do think that people living in a neighborhood should know what is being filmed and the time frame.

The actors that would impress me enough are:

    1) Robert Carlyle

    2) Emma Watson

    3) Amanda Tapping

    4) David Hewlett

    5) Daniel Radcliffe

    6) Will Smith

    7) Bruce Lee

    8) Rupert Grint

    9) Maggie Smith

    10) Alan Rickman

    11) Tom Felton

    12) Helena Bonham Carter

    13) Gary Oldman

These are actually some good questions. Not travel related, but good nonetheless.

There is a web site which lists permits for location shoots, but does not list the production. In my experience, it's not hard to approach a crew member to find out the production. My guess is that they are using a house for interior and exterior shots, and it must be a series.

As for whether homeowner should be allowed to do this, I believe that they should. However, you need to be a good neighbor. You should throw your neighbors a bone, like a nice wrap party or something. Warn the neighbors beforehand, and maybe have a wrap party with cast and crew, sharing the wealth and a little celebrity encounter. That would go a long way towards preventing problems.

You ask such long questions I would feel bad if I gave a short answer! I'll probably come back to edit. Anyway if the sassy popo aren't helping with any answers I would ask your neighbors. I'm assuming your dad doesn't know much either? Have you noticed any paparazzi lurking nearby? Maybe you could find out with a bit of mild, fun snooping. What you discover may be rewarding. I don't know of any place that would provide you with info on filming and if Universal is investing so much in security then you probably won't find out on the internet or anything.

BQ: I think it was justifiable for the Los Feliz residents to oppose filming near their homes because they live in a gated community. There's not much one can do in residential areas, and if there was it'd be extremely exhausting for both the production company and the residents to deal with. Personally I'd rather have the cash and allow filming in my home for a short period of time. It's really not that big of a deal, especially if you're rewarded with perks like free movie tickets or the star actor falling in love with you at first sight or something. If they were filming on my street for more that 2 weeks and were causing multiple minor inconveniences such as blocking my driveway, bright lights and noise at night, noise early in the morning, untidiness, etc I would be annoyed as I'm sure any one else on my street would be. We live in a very quiet and calm area that's rarely ever used as a through street so there's never any traffic and it's extremely safe. Luckily films are never shot on my street and are typically filmed a few blocks down on a more busy street. My best friend's dad owns an art ranch that is a common spot for filming. Panic! at the Disco filmed a music video there and Ashton Kutcher did a photoshoot there a few years ago. Neither my friend nor her dad mind because they have a huge plot of land so they rarely have to interact, see, or hear from the cast and crew and they make a large profit.

I would go out of my way and leave the comfort of my home to see:

James Franco (he was directing in front of my friend's house recently!)

    Emma Watson

    Robert Downey Jr

Helena Bonham Carter (I practically snuck into the LACMA to meet Tim Burton)

Robert Pattinson (just because he is oh so aesthetically pleasing)

    Angelina Jolie

Hugh Laurie (because I love House)

    Natalie Portman

    Emma Thompson

    Carrie Mulligan

    Johnny Depp

    Meryl Streep

I like plenty more actors and many of them are more obscure but if I was in your situation and too ill to even go out in the first place, I would probably only go out if they were super famous and others could join in my delight.

    :) feel better soon!

This is the second time this week you made me LOL with one of your questions.

"I really want to know what's going on, but I'm under the weather and don't want to go out to inquire and wind up puking on someone." It's just the way you phrase things that's so adorable.

It's great you know what the production is now. Here's some info on it:

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1615065/

You must live in a fancy part of town for them to want to film there!

As for your other questions. I would be ok with filming in my neighborhood, within reason. So long as the crew was pretty respectful of the common areas I wouldn't mind at all.

I'd most want to see John Wayne (not possible anymore), Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Aniston, Kate Beckinsale, and Natalie Portman.

Hope you had some fun watching the filming and got to feeling better!

I'm so jealous. NOTHING ever happens here. That must be so exciting!

I think it would be great to have movies shot right on your street! That's not fair that a few ppl spoiled it for everybody else!

I'm sorry your sick. :( That really sux cause you already had to deal with being sick.

I'd go outside even if I was dying cause I've never seen anybody famous, ever, lol.

Um this is my list of my favourites

    Robert Pattinson

    Taylor Lautner

    Emma Watson

Well anybody from Harry Potter!!! :D

    Angelina Jolie

    Brad Pitt

    Justin Timberlake
