Is there a way to be nice without unintentionally leading someone on if they have a crush on you?

I like being nice to people that are nice to me, but I've noticed that some people can't tell the difference between me being nice and me flirting and they seem to have a bit of a crush on me. Yes, I'm aware that it sounds like I'm full of myself, but I don't know how else to explain it.

It's landed me in some awkward situations and I don't want to flat-out say that I don't like them, especially since that would be even more awkward if they happened to not actually like me. In the past, I've settled for being kind of cold toward the people that were too clingy and hoping that they'd get the hint.

Just smile sweetly and tell them in a gentle voice, "Umm.. *sigh* I'm really flattered, but I really like you as a friend. I hope you're not upset." and then you do the sentimental head tilt with the "i feel really terrible" face. maybe touch his arm if he looks like you just ripped out his heart. and then you continue with, "I think you're really awesome, though, and I think you'll make some girl really happy one day!" (insert cheerful but still sympathetic smile)

or you could always say you're interested in someone else. avoid telling the poor guy you have a boyfriend though, cause then you could possibly need to follow up with some proof later on.
