Is it all just in my head?

My best guy friend (Friends for about 6 years) and I have always been flirty. But Last year he dated this girl who broke his heart. She treated him terribly and I stuck around to cheer him up. After about a month he started telling me I was "hot" "sexy" etc. and how he wanted a "picture" and to "kiss me" and stuff. I don't do that stuff though, besides kissing, I'm just 17. Anyway, he finally told me that he really did wanna kiss me because he liked me, and that he wasn't going to pressure me into that stuff. Then the next day he said he was "just kidding" or something, and that we were "just friends". So I'm just wondering if I have a reason to be confused, and if i'd be right to ask him what the deal is... I really like this guy, but I don't know what he's thinking.
