Has the mainstream media ever discovered how much Jimmy Wales is worth?

It's mostly political. The corporate owners of large media conglomerates figure that if they start running stories on other people's net worth(s) specifically, the other people might try to do the same to them, and that would upset them.

Also, since he isn't one of the richest people in the world, like Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg (who gets a similar treatment from Google's autocomplete feature), Wales isn't going to be included in a "100 Richest People" article, which is where most such coverage is to be found.

Last but not least, Jimbo Wales is boring, and nobody likes seeing pictures of him now because they've seen enough of those on Wikipedia's fundraising banner ads, which they run every 6 months for 2-3 weeks at a time.

Because the mainstream media is covering important topics like Amy Winehouse's death, Charlie Sheen's drug and alcohol abuse, the debt ceiling negotiations between the President and Congress, and why someone shot about 70 people in Norway. As much as you'd like the news to cater to your specific views, the vast majority of people are interested in news that really matters.
