Balkans: What prompted the border conflict between Kosovo and Serbia?

Government of Kosovo wanted to get control over their borders.

There's no similarity between this and conflicts in the Middle East.

Religion doesn't have to do anything with this conflict. Albanians of Kosovo(or Kosovans as you call us) are Muslim & Catholic.

This hate between these two nations has started in the 6th century when Serbians(South Slavs) moved to Balkan peninsula which, at that time, was populated by Albanians.

The root of the problem lays in the self-proclaimed declaration of independence of Kosovo over Serbia. Serbia, which is a member of UN Security Council, does not recognize it.

Religion is not the issue here. The issue is land grab.

One very interesting note from the BBC link is that it is not NATO the one operating there. It is KFOR, which has the 1244 Resolution mandate and is officially responsible. The bizarre thing is that in reality it is NATO soldiers operating under KFOR, but it is still KFOR and not NATO.

I may assume that BBC is not stupid, but that the "mistake" is deliberate...
