Is it harder to get to number 1 or to keep number 1 spot?

The trouble with being number one in the world - in anything - is that it takes a certain mentality to attain that position, and that is something of a driving, perfectionist attitude, so that once you do achieve number one, you don't have time relax and enjoy it.

Infinitely more difficult when the only way is down. Teams reach top-billing on the back of a long string of good performances over a long period of time. Player turn-over, through age and form, both within and without your own team means the team that got you there, and the sides defeated along the way will not remain the same.

I understand your pain. My husband and I have been trying for almost 2 years now...and I'm currently in a very small office with 2 pregnant women (not to include all the others I know, very much like your situation). If you aren't ready to spend money on OPKs - that's fine. I recommend, in that case, charting your BBTs (google this term - tons of information). What BBTs will tell most people is if you have ovulated (not a predictor like OPKs!). The thermometers for this are only $10 and all you have to do is take your temperature first thing in the morning before you get out of bed or drink anything. After a few months of charting BBTs, you should see a pattern start to emerge! OPKs are helpful at this point. But, of course, you can always start with a talk to a fertility specialist!

    Very good question my friend.

I believe its harder to keep that elusive no.1 spot and not many teams can do that.

Australia did that for so many years because of the players they had in their team (Ricky Ponting , Mathew Hayden , Shane Warne , Adam Gilchrist , Glenn Mcgrath) . They were the difference makers . Now half of them have retired and look - Australia lost the no.1 spot in Test Cricket which they had for such a long time . India now went on to become no.1 and have kept that spot for a quite long time now . Same reason - the players which they have (Little Master , The Wall , Squashbuckler Sehwag , Zaheer Khan , VVS ) . These are the best players of the game .

And to keep number 1 spot , you need to perform consistently - day in and day out . And for that you need responsive players in your team who can Stand up when required . India have a very good leadership in MS Dhoni who is known for his composure and his temperament.

Definitely keeping up the no.1 spot is very difficult because you keep facing challenges now and then against different teams . Now England are closing in as they have a very balanced side much like India.

Both milestones are hard to achieve. But I'd say getting to number one spot is harder than keeping it. After getting to number one spot you know what it takes to keep winning so it is just the matter of keeping your consistency. But before getting to that spot you are nerves what to do to gain that position because many better oppositions are ahead of you. So it'll take some doing to overcome all the odds and achieve that spot.

Regardless you are number one or not you have no time to relax. If you are number one then you got your work cut out to maintain that position. If you are not the number one then still you got to work hard to get in to the number one position. All the fans are expecting you to go to the top of the table likewise i am expecting Sri lanka and you are expecting Australia to get there. So both situations are in the same league!

If you are number one, you can enjoy yourself and brag a little in between the tournaments. If you are not the number one then you can have some joy seeing the number one team getting defeated!

Going strictly be mathematical (probability) reasoning, its harder to hold onto numero uno. When you're on top, you cant fly any higher. You remain floating there or you fall and sink. The points ranking system also rewards a lower ranked team for narrow series losses to a top side, while the top side gets just the odd point even if they clean sweep a series.

Its hard to get to no.1 but harder to maintain it. As you can't look at anyone but yourself at the top but rest can see you, admire you & have the desire to topple you one day. You have to churn out your best performances, day in day out to maintain your position. Bunch of others, maybe no.2 or no.3 can have a bad day but yet again mount their challenge at another place & time and be in the race again to catch up with you. You are absolutely right in saying that its difficult to relax & enjoy your no.1 position, which comes with few perks as well !!

It's harder to keep number 1. Basically you get more rankings points for beating a team ranked higher than you, so if you're on the top of the heap you don't get as many points for winning but a loss or draw can see you drop right back. Look at India's last 2 series. They beat NZ at home 1-0 and beat WI 1-0 away and yet their ranking dropped by about 11 points down to 125.
