there is actually no such thing as a 'white' metal - even platinum is actually a soft silver-grey colour.white gold is an alloy, and some of these alloys are more yellow or more grey depending on the content.most white metals are rhodium plated.anyway, you have no right to take the ring back because this is what happens to white gold it will just happen again.what you do is take it to a jewellers and have it re-plated with rhodium, repeat every few years.simples

Gold by nature is yellow. It is the alloy in karat gold that makes it a white color. White gold that is not rhodium plated (which is a very common practice to make it brighter white) has a very very slight yellow tinge most people can't even notice, but the dominate color is white. White gold will never turn yellow or look yellow, even if the rhodium comes off. If it's just a tinge of yellow (comparable to the change a white shirt will get over time, just a bit off white) it needs to be re-rhodium plated, which will bring it back to new looking. That is no reason to return the ring, it's just the nature of the beast so to say since gold isn't a white metal to begin with.

If it has turned actual yellow, like you would find in a true yellow gold piece, then the place lied to you or your husband forgot to tell you he had it turned white. Ask your husband first before you march in on a tirade, because if he picked the ring and surprised you, he may have requested the plating knowing very well it was yellow gold to begin with. If that's not the case, you have every right to return it. They lied plain and simple if the ring was purchased as white gold and it was actually rhodium plated yellow gold and the purchaser was none the wiser.

Source(s): I work in a jewelry store, and we do occasionally have a guy request we turn a yellow gold piece white with rhodium, and whether or not he tells the lady, that's not our problem. However, we never sell rhodium plated yellow gold as white, that will always come back and bite you in the butt.

organic 24kt gold in ordinary terms is provided in a single shade and that's yellow. there is not any such element as organic white gold. till the gold is 24 kt that's blended with different metals. the version between the white and yellow gold is that the yellow 14kt gold is blended with severe high quality silver at the same time as the white gold is blended with copper, zinc, nickel and severe high quality silver. an identical is going for the ten kt white or yellow gold. the better the kt the fewer proportion of alternative metals. the proportion of organic yellow gold is an identical in the two the white and yellow gold of an identical kt. some human beings are allergic to nickel and steer far off from the white gold subsequently. so some distance as no count if one can decide for white or yellow gold, that's a controversy of private determination. good now white is extra of the craze, despite the fact that, who says you may persist with the team. you may consistently persist with your heart whilst finding out on. in case you gain this, you would be chuffed.

It needs to be re rhodium plated. They need this about every 6 months to a year. It only costs $50 or so. I do not think they would take the ring back, this is fairly common knowledge.

All gold is yellow...."white gold" is really yellow gold covered with rhodium. Depending on the wear and tear on your ring, will depend on how long the coating lasts.Go visit your jeweler and have your ring re-coated.... Good Luck

Nope. It's been a year. Your ring needs to be replated with rhodium or whatever other material it was coated/dipped/plated with.

This is why you shouldn't go for white gold and opt for more stable white metals like platinum or palladium.

No you can not return the ring after a year. This is a buyer beware situation, the onus is on you to ask the questions and do the research.

Yes, go back and get their advice, they were wrong in not telling you this but its your word against theirs. However if you are not happy with the ring then you have every right to return it and see what they have to say.

    Best of luck.

  • The rhodium plating has worn off....for a small fee it can be replated and no, you've worn it for a year you can not return it now.
