If an admiral kills himself, does he still get a military funeral?

I watched this JAG rerun in which everyone thinks Admiral Clancy killed himself at first and it isn't until like the end of the episode that they discover it was really murder. Yet, they give him a military funeral.

Also, what would happen in real life if the widow refused to take the flag?

Bonus: didn't they say in some earlier episode that Chegwidden was CNO before he was JAG? Yet in this episode SecNav dangles him the carrot of Deputy CNO to get him to drop the investigation on Clancy's death.

There are no exclusions in military policy for funerals. He has served, and is entitled to all military honors.

The main thing I know about military suicides is that up until quite recently, their families would not receive a condolence letter from the President as do other military families. Obama has reversed that long-standing tradition.

There was a real Navy Admiral who killed him self in 1996. He was the Chief Naval Officer (CNO).

He was Admiral Boorda. He was the first CNO to have been prior enlisted. He was a very well liked and respected person. It was a shock to everyone in the Navy when it happened. It was a tragedy. He was struggling with some legal and personal problems and he couldn't take it anymore. It mostly stemmed from an award with the combat V on it. He wore a Combat V when he wasn't supposed to. It got out in the press and it went down hill from there.

He was given a military funereal with honors and he is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

He left a legacy and a way for enlisted men and women to become officers. He was the highest ranking officer in the Navy and he did not go to the academy. It was an amazing career, and a sad ending.

As far as refusing the flag, I never heard about his widow, that must have been for television..

Also usually the family requests there was some reason that the family didn't want it then someone would mention it before the funeral and it wouldn't be presented.

Note: I don't remember that episode, but I have watched JAG before....I don't think that story was about a real person...I am just answering that if someone in the military dies by suicide they still get a funeral with honors....and that I know of only one actual admiral that it happened to. Most admirals don't commit suicide...in fact most people in Navy don't...but of the few who do most are lower ranking...and even a low ranking enlisted person would get a military funeral.
