Is this for a regular church service or a special occasion such as wedding, funeral, installation of church officers or new minister, etc? And what denomination is this? A setting of "Ave Maria" is always good for Catholic services---not so much with the Baptists.

Have you spoken to the choir director or music director of your church for suggestions? He or she probably has lots of sheet music you can borrow and would be glad to help you rehearse or set you up with the church accompanist for at least a couple of pre-performance run throughs. Plus the minister of the church will always have personal favorites, or know of congregational favorites that people might enjoy.

Whatever you do, remember it is for a church. Unless you are part of a fairly liberal church and are singing in a church sponsored talent show--stick to religious songs. Err in favor of traditional songs if you aren't sure if the church is into more modern Christian music (again, ask the music director or minister for advice). Do pick something that will let you shine as a singer, but remember to keep your ego in check. If it is for a service, you are being asked to sing to glorify the Lord and add beauty to the occasion. Don't make it all about YOU. I hate singers who hijack services by launching into overly elaborate embellishments in the middle of their songs--pet peeve. They do this singing the National Anthem at functions too. We don't need a twenty minute rendition of a 2 or 3 minute song because you want to show off how well you can do runs.

In general, traditional hymns and liturgy as well as any musical settings of Bible verses are pretty safe bets. If you have any sort of classical training or experience singing classical music, oratorio arias such as Handel's "He Shall Feed His Flock", "I Know My Redeemer Liveth" and Mendelssohn's "Hear Ye Israel" are also popular choices. Here is a website that has many hymns that you can listen to and see if anything strikes your fancy. Meanwhile--please do the obvious and ask the minister and/or director.
