Anything that requires the transportation of materials goods (not just information or communication) requires a method to import and export.
The advantages are usually economic in nature and most of the disadvantages stem for items or creatures which are not the primary cargo being transported as well. This might include diseased crew or passengers.
From the so called Age of Discovery to the present, the transportation of micro-organisms, especially pathogens, has always had a negative effect on the societies participating in the cargo trade on a worldwide basis. Before then, land routes brought plague as well as silk and spices.
The disadvantages are usually medical, but they also lead to cultural changes as well. Slavery is another example.
