It should not make any changes on your system if you do it right. You have to change the battery in a short time (few minutes, no rush). It meant to be changed time to time. However the bios resets in the following cases: 1. if you wait too long and the system uses up the reserved current stored in the memory. 2. if you reset the cmos (Bios) by shorting the pins assigned for that purpose.
This is the general solution. To be sure you can go trough the bios and note down which options are selected before you change the battery, but I never had any problem with it and I did it many times.
However you can refer to the motherboard manual for further details. And one other thing use plastic or insulated tweezers to replace the battery. If you use your hand than the fat and moisture may corrode the battery contacts and cause trouble later. And of course unplug the computer and remove the batteries before changing your cmos battery.

After changing the CMOS battery expect the bios settings to revert to Failsafe mode, although if you changed the battery quickly it may not have affected anything

normally you don't have to change any settings other than setting time and date after replacing the cmos battery

The bios reverts to its factory settings. It can only be reconfigured by the factory, so you will probably have to send it back in, either that, or it will need the time reset and will run as it did when you got the system, because the system has reverted to its factory settings.
Just to be on the safe side, take it into an authorized service center and pay $100 for a 3 minute job.
