Can you look at my application essay please?

please look at the following and provide some constructive criticism. This is an application statement for a lab position in college.

In the space below, please write a personal statement of approximately one page. Topics to cover might include: why you want to do research, what field(s) you are most interested in, why you want to work with a BIO5 faculty member, what your future plans are, etc.

I would like to gain experience in research because it is something I am interested in, and want to discover exactly what it is I want to do in my future. I know that I love science and its practices, and I want to get some hands-on experience in an actual research lab.

I want to conduct research in fields such as virology, which I find extremely intriguing and most definitely makes me curious as to how specific foreign bodies react with our immune system, what chemical processes are involved, and what there is that we, as researchers, can do to defend our bodies. All the ideas, processes, and obstacles facing defense against them are quite appealing and something I would like to explore. I want to get my hands on some lab tools, and see for myself how these things happen on a biological level.

I am also aware of other fields out there, not necessarily research, but fields which require lab equipment commonly used in research. A field such as forensics is something that is observed on a small scale, using the above mentions tools. It requires critical thinking and putting puzzle pieces together without knowing what the end result looks like. It is something I would like to do, put these pieces together, whether in a criminal case, or the biology of a virus/ health disorder.

Working with a BIO5 member would help on the personal level, being able to discuss how they got there, how they feel about the subject and their job. It provides me with someone that I can ask questions and get help from. Many of the faculty members know what it is like to be an undergraduate seeking experience in a lab, and it is something I want to be a part of. They know where I am coming from and understand my confusion.

I am still unsure about my future plans after graduation, which is why I want to be a part of this program. I want to make sure that this is something I want to continue on with and make a career out of it, based on first hand lab experience.

Very honest paper, but maybe you should try to sound a little more confident. discuss your strengths, any experience you have whether it be academic/class/class labs, what you discovered in class that interested you in doing more research. Maybe instead of saying "I am still unsure about my future plans after graduation, which is why I want to be a part of this program." Maybe say something like: I believe that this program will not only provide access to hands on experience, knowledge and training, but I am hoping to learn more about myself in the process and discover my next steps after graduation"

Think about rephrasing some of the areas in the in the paper, to show that you are more confident in yourself and not lost at all..but just eager to learn and apply yourself. I'm sure they already understand the level of education and experience you already have, so focus more on what you are already good at and talk about how you want to increase utilize your education and gain more experience.

    GOOD LUCK!
