We don't know, but there is no asteroid going to hit us in 2012, 2036, or any year in between. In fact, there is no known object on a collision course with Earth for at least the next 100 years. Meteorites hit the Earth daily, but there's nothing bigger coming anywhere near us. Apophis will make a close pass in 2029, but won't hit us. It has a miniscule chance of impact in 2036 (0.0004%), but you have a far bigger chance of dying from a fall in the home than Apophis has of impacting Earth, much less killing you. It's all bullsh!t.

An asteroid will almost certainly collide with Earth again at some point, but right now there are no known objects with a significant chance of hitting us for at least a hundred years.
The 2012 rumors are all garbage. You can safely ignore them.
2036 is the year we have a close encounter with the asteroid 99942 Apophis. Current calculations put the impact risk at 1 in 250,000, or 0.000004%. In other words, it almost certain to miss us, and observations during its 2013 pass will give scientists much better insight into its exact orbit.

You're speaking about the asteroid Apophis.
In 2029, there's a VERY SMALL chance that this asteroid will pass through a critical gravitational point, which would set it up for a collision with Earth on 13 April 2036.
Apparently, the chances of an impact on 13 April 2036 are about 1 in 250,000.
So, not bullshit, but not very likely, either.

There's no way to know. We can be very sure that nothing disastrous will hit in the next 30 years or so though, since NASA and other agencies around the world have been scouring the skies and haven't found anything big with our name on it within that timeframe.
Your intuition that the 2012 and other doomsday predictions might be BS and/or hype is on target. The 2012 doomsday predictions are a mix of bad science and bad history that collapse when looked at closely. The things you've heard about Apophis (and other asteroids) hitting us in 2036 or whatever is hype--it's people taking announcements that there's a small (say, 1 in 30,000) chance of such-and-such hitting us, and blowing it into "It's going to hit us!!!eleven!!11"

The only known asteroid that may hit the Earth is 99942 Apophis with a 1 in 250,000 chance of hitting us in 2036.
The 2012 year is all part of the huge hoax that has so many people fooled.
While Apophis could hit in 2036, its only 300 meters across - it would certainly cause a lot of damage and loss of life, but it would not be a global catastrophe.

Asteroids and meteoroids are hitting Earth all the time, but most are too small to do anything besides making a pretty "shooting star." At present there are NO large asteroids predicted to hit the Earth, but that could change with new discoveries.

an asteroid that could cause severe damage and extinction will not hit the earth in the next 10 years
Information on asteroids which pose a potential impact threat is updated almost daily at the Impact Hazard Page (link below) so please look there for the answer to your question.

millions of asteroids burn up in earth's atmosphere each year. A couple hundred land on the ground. As for a asteroid that was like the one that made the dinosaurs go extinct, probably in the distant future, yes.

Nah chances are 00000000000.1 and if it where to hit we would be gone in a blink of an eye i would not worry we have survived this long a bit of rock ain't gonna squash me.
